The role

Senior Claims Adjuster responsible for managing a portfolio of US casualty claims from first notification to settlement. Responsibilities include:

  • Handling casualty claims across various Chaucer offices on Lloyd’s and company platforms from first advice to closure, determining coverage, setting reserves and settlement.
  • Liaising with co‑insurers on large or contentious claims, including issuing market circulars.
  • Assigning, managing and controlling service providers (lawyers, adjusters, DCAs) throughout the life of a claim.
  • Maintaining accurate electronic claims files and ensuring records reflect current claim status.
  • Arranging and attending market, broker and client meetings virtually or in person.
  • Advising the claims manager and class underwriters on material claims and keeping them informed of developments.
  • Communicating key claim trends and issues to management and internal departments such as underwriting and actuarial.
  • Liaising with the Reinsurance department for notifications and updates to reinsurers.
  • Consulting with class underwriters on underwriting intent and escalating ex‑gratia or commercial settlement requests when coverage is disputed.
  • Building and maintaining relationships with brokers, adjusters, agents, coverholders, DCAs and other service providers.
  • Applying knowledge of tort and contract law and staying current with statutory and case developments.
  • Keeping abreast of technical developments in International Casualty through presentations and independent research.
  • Undertaking business travel when necessary.

Regulatory responsibilities

  • Guide customers on how to make or progress a claim.
  • Provide appropriate information to the customer about any claim being handled.
  • Strive to reach prompt settlement terms and pay valid claims timely once agreed.
  • Identify, record and refer customer complaints appropriately.
  • Ensure that the Treating Customers Fairly principles are upheld by agents and service providers.
  • Maintain compliance with regulatory training requirements (e.g. California Claims Handling Regulations).
  • Comply with regulatory bodies such as Lloyd’s and the FCA.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • 5+ years handling US casualty claims across lines such as professional indemnity, general liability and product liability.
  • 5+ years in a claims handling role for a London market insurer.
  • Familiarity with delegated authority processes and DCA management.
  • Experience handling medical malpractice and warranty & indemnity claims.

Skills

  • Competent with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel).
  • Proficient with key London market systems such as ECF.

Qualifications

  • Studying towards or completed ACII qualification.
  • Able to work proactively without direct supervision.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills with ability to liaise at all levels.
  • Flexible and diplomatic with an investigative mindset.
  • Excellent organisational and time‑management skills.
