Hybrid role at the intersection of data modelling, data engineering, and data governance. Reports to the CTG Architecture function with a dotted line to the Data function. Requires strategic vision to design enterprise‑scale data architectures and technical expertise to build robust data pipelines and integrations. Ensures all data designs derived from changes and products align with enterprise data strategy, defined principles, and adherence to data standards. Shapes how data is structured, governed, and moved across the business – from market‑facing transactional systems to analytical platforms – collaborating closely with underwriting, claims, actuarial, finance, and data teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Data Architecture & Modelling – Design and manage enterprise data architecture, standards, and principles across operational and analytical domains (submission, risk, premium, claims, bordereaux, regulatory reporting). Own the target architecture design, support data product roadmaps, partner with portfolio architects, and govern data modelling standards, selecting paradigms such as model‑first or data‑first for appropriate workloads.
- Data Engineering & Platform Support – Architect and oversee batch ETL/ELT pipelines, choosing integration patterns, and ensuring alignment with technology, data strategy, and tooling. Provide QA for data engineers, support cloud migration (on‑prem SQL Server/SSIS to Azure and Snowflake), and maintain coding standards.
- Stakeholder Engagement & Governance – Act as primary data architecture authority, engaging business stakeholders, technology leads, and external partners (Lloyd’s, brokers, coverholders, third‑party data providers). Interface between Enterprise Architecture, Data, and delivery teams. Support Data Governance, embed ownership, classification, quality controls, and consistent data definitions. Chair the Data Design Authority (DDA), provide architecture assurance for new systems, identify and mitigate technical debt, produce artefacts (flow diagrams, conceptual models), and support AI‑enabled initiatives.
Skills & Experience
- Essential Experience
- Azure‑native data platform (ADLS Gen2, Azure Synapse, Purview, ADF).
- Data modelling across model‑first (3NF, Snowflake, Star, Medallion) and data‑first (Data Lake, Lakehouse) paradigms.
- Hands‑on design and delivery of batch ETL/ELT pipelines using Snowflake, SQL Server, Azure Data Factory, SSIS, and/or Python.
- Enterprise data architecture principles, including data standardisation, governance, and debt management.
- Documentation of enterprise‑level data architecture artefacts.
- Experience with AI and ML initiatives from a data architecture perspective.
- Desirable Experience
- Experience in the Lloyd’s and/or London insurance markets (Managing agents, Brokers, Coverholders, Central services).
- Familiarity with ACORD standards (GRLC, CRP, A4A, AL3) and delegated authority data flows including bordereaux processing.
- Knowledge of Lloyd’s regulatory reporting requirements (SolvencyII, Lloyd’s RDS, SBF).
- Understanding of data mesh or data product operating models.
Relevant Professional Certifications
- Snowflake SnowPro, Microsoft Azure Data Engineer Associate, TOGAF, DAMA CDMP.
Personal Attributes
- Intellectually curious with a strong instinct to understand business context before prescribing technical solutions.
- Effective across multiple stakeholder groups, from underwriters and claims handlers to software engineers and data scientists.
- Pragmatic – balances architectural rigour with delivery pace.
- Strong communicator, capable of making complex data concepts accessible to non‑technical audiences.
- Comfortable with ambiguity and able to bring structure and direction to nascent or poorly defined data domains.
- Able to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and remain calm under stress and uncertainty.
