Job Summary
Responsible for handling claims from first advice to settlement, including the instruction of surveyors, adjusters and/or lawyers where appropriate, ensuring that Chaucer’s records accurately reflect the current status of each claim.
Main Duties
- Liaising with co‑insuring syndicates, companies and claims bureau on large or contentious claims (including issuing market circulars)
- Assigning, managing, controlling and liaising with relevant service providers during the life of a claim (including lawyers, loss adjusters, third‑party administrators)
- Maintaining files for all lead and Claims Agreement Party claims ensuring that Chaucer’s electronic claims records accurately reflect the current position
- Exercise knowledge of the laws of tort and contract and keep abreast of relevant statutory and case development
- Building and maintaining relationships with brokers, adjusters, agents, coverholders, TPAs and other service providers, dealing with them in an efficient, polite and professional manner
- Liaising with reinsurance and underwriting departments as may be required on key issues
- Work with class underwriters to monitor particular classes of business and identify claim activity within it, including suggesting remedial measures for the future
- Respond to policyholder complaints via the established mechanism
- Preparation and analysis of monthly/quarterly reports
- Consult with class underwriters in situations where clarification of underwriting intent is required, where requests for ex‑gratia/commercial settlements have been presented, and where coverage is disputed
- Undertake business travel if and when necessary
Regulatory Responsibilities
- Provide guidance to customers on how to make and/or progress a claim
- Supply appropriate information to the customer on any claim being handled
- Ensure prompt agreement on settlement terms and pay valid claims in a timely manner once settlement terms have been agreed
- Identify, record and refer customer complaints as appropriate
- Ensure that the principles of Treating Customers Fairly are upheld by agents and service providers
- Maintain certification of any regulatory training requirements
Requirements
Relevant Experience
- Experience of handling property claims, high‑level organisational skills. Any experience across property binders, energy or marine classes, CII, or progress towards ACII would be desirable.
Education & Experience
- Maths and English GCSE or equivalent, five GCSE passes at grade C or higher.
