Are you an experienced Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) ready to take the next step into a senior leadership role? We’re recruiting for a confident and motivated Head Veterinary Nurse in Liverpool to lead a busy and growing small animal nursing team. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced RVN who enjoys developing others, driving clinical standards and creating a positive, accountable team culture.
You’ll play a key role in shaping the future of the nursing department while remaining hands-on clinically and working closely with the Practice Manager and Veterinary Surgeons.
The Role
As Head Veterinary Nurse, you’ll oversee the day-to-day running of the nursing team while helping to maintain and continually improve clinical standards across the practice. Your responsibilities will include:
- Leading and supporting the nursing team through hands-on clinical work
- Mentoring and developing RVNs, student nurses, VCAs and support staff
- Identifying training needs and supporting professional development
- Running regular nursing team meetings and one-to-ones
- Supporting appraisals, performance reviews and development plans
- Creating and managing nursing rotas
- Ensuring appropriate staffing levels and effective resource allocation
- Maintaining high clinical, professional and infection control standards
- Implementing and reviewing clinical protocols and SOPs
- Working alongside the leadership team to drive continual improvement
- Promoting a culture of teamwork, professionalism and accountability
This role would suit an RVN who can balance compassionate leadership with accountability, confidently support colleagues and address performance concerns when required.
About You
We’re looking for an experienced Registered Veterinary Nurse who is confident leading a team within a busy small animal environment. You’ll ideally have:
- RCVS registration
- Previous senior, supervisory or leadership experience
- Strong small animal nursing experience
- Excellent anaesthetic, surgical and inpatient nursing skills
- Experience creating and managing staff rotas
- Excellent organisational and time management skills
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Confidence making decisions and handling challenging situations
- A genuine passion for coaching and developing colleagues
- A professional and consistent approach to maintaining standards
- A commitment to excellent patient and client care
Desirable Experience
The following would be advantageous:
- Clinical Coach qualification
- Experience with nurse consultations and Schedule 3 procedures
- Experience implementing clinical protocols and SOPs
- Involvement in recruitment, appraisals or performance management
