We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity to join our friendly, well organised and supportive team at Chastleton Medical Group, located just outside the historic city of Durham.

Chastleton Medical Group is led by 3 GP Partners, supported by 6 salaried GP's and has a diverse multidisciplinary team consisting of nurse practitioners, nurses, nursing associates, health care assistants, pharmacy team, care coordinator, social prescribing link worker and a mental health practitioner.

The practice is supported by an experienced management team, administration and reception team.

Interviews will take place on the 12th & 13th August 2026

Main duties of the job

To be responsible for undertaking a wide range of secretarial and administrative duties and the provision of administrative support to the multidisciplinary team.

Duties can include, but are not limited to, the processing of information (electronic and hard copy) in a timely manner, liaising with multidisciplinary team members and external agencies such as secondary care and community service providers in accordance with current policies, including the use of the electronic referral service (ERS).

The following are the core responsibilities of the Medical Secretary.

There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks, this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

  • Typingletters, reports and associated documentation as required
  • Liaisingwith external agencies such as hospitals and community services, ensuringreferrals are processed efficiently
  • Managingall enquires in an effective manner
  • Actioningall incoming email
  • Processingcalling letters as requested
  • Scanningof patient related documentation and attaching scanned documents to patientshealthcare records
  • Inputtingdata into the patients healthcare records as necessary
  • Processingreferrals using the electronic referral system (ERS)
  • Providingadministrative support to the management team
  • Processingrequests for information i. e., SAR, insurance/solicitors letters and DVLAforms
  • Clinicallycoding data on Systm One
  • Answeringincoming phone calls, transferring calls or dealing with the callers requestappropriately
  • Managingall administrative queries as necessary including tasks
  • Carryingout system searches as requested
  • Supportingall clinical staff with general administrative tasks as requested
  • Maintain GPTN

Person Specification

Experience

  • Experience of working with the general public
  • Experience of administrative duties
  • Experience of working in a healthcare setting as a medical secretary

Qualifications

  • Educated to GCSE level or equivalent
  • GCSE Mathematics and English (C or above)
  • NVQ Level 2 in Health & Social Care
