Job Overview: The Pre-assessment Nurse will be responsible for conducting thorough assessments of patients before their surgical procedures. This role requires a keen eye for detail, strong clinical skills, and the ability to interact empathetically with patients to ensure they are physically and mentally prepared for their surgery. The successful candidate will be a key member of the multidisciplinary team, working closely with surgeons, anaesthetists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure the best possible care and outcome for patients.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct detailed pre-assessment of patients scheduled for surgery, including reviewing medical histories, performing health screenings, and assessing patients' physical and emotional readiness for surgery.
- Monitor and assess vital signs, perform physical examinations, and ensure all necessary pre-surgery investigations (e.g., blood tests, ECG) are completed.
- Identify any pre-existing medical conditions, allergies, or medications that may impact the patient's surgical procedure or anaesthesia plan.
- Provide patients with clear information about the surgery process, including what to expect before, during, and after the procedure.
- Offer advice and support to patients, answering any questions or concerns they may have about their surgery, and provide reassurance where necessary.
- Coordinate and communicate with other departments, including anaesthesia, medical, and surgical teams, to ensure all relevant information is gathered and shared.
- Ensure all pre-assessment documentation is completed accurately and stored according to hospital protocols.
- Provide pre-operative instructions and support to patients, including advice on fasting, medications, and other pre-operative preparations.
- Ensure infection control standards are maintained and patient safety is a top priority at all times.
- Educate patients about post-operative care, including wound care, medication, and signs of potential complications.
- Maintain accurate patient records in line with hospital policies and legal requirements.
Requirements:
- Registered Nurse with an active NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council) registration.
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a clinical nursing role, preferably in pre-assessment, outpatient, or surgical settings.
- Experience with Pediatric and adult patients.
- Strong knowledge of medical and surgical procedures, as well as anaesthesia and post-operative care.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain complex medical information in an easily understandable way.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple patient assessments at the same time.
- High level of attention to detail and a patient-centered approach to care.
- Ability to remain calm under pressure and handle sensitive situations with empathy and professionalism.
- Strong understanding of infection control protocols and patient safety standards.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Postgraduate qualification in a relevant field (e.g., surgical nursing, pre-assessment nursing).
- Experience working within a multidisciplinary team.
- ILS, BLS, PBLS.
- Advanced knowledge of current pre-assessment guidelines and best practices.
- Knowledge of relevant IT systems and patient management software.
