Haywood & Padgett Ltd is the world’s largest producer of traditional British scones, proudly the Home of the Scone. Since 1987, we’ve been baking with passion and expertise, supplying leading UK retailers and foodservice partners from our modern site in Carlton, Barnsley.
We are seeking a skilled Technical Manager to lead our site’s technical function. You will ensure all products meet food safety, quality, and legal requirements, while driving a strong food safety culture across the business.
Key responsibilities:- Lead, mentor, and develop the technical team, ensuring collaboration across Technical, NPD, Production, and Commercial departments.
- Represent the business in customer meetings and audits, interpret codes of practice, and maintain strong technical communication.
- Ensure compliance with BRCGS Food Safety Standards, lead internal audits, oversee TACCP/VACCP processes, and drive corrective actions.
- Approve and maintain product specifications, oversee QAS, and ensure packaging artwork meets technical and customer standards.
- Manage supplier approval systems, review specifications, and support procurement decisions.
- Deliver KPIs, audits, and reports, ensuring robust food safety and quality systems.
We’re looking for a confident, proactive leader with excellent communication and interpersonal skills. You will be decisive, commercially astute, and able to influence and inspire your team. A strong team player, you’ll thrive in a fast‑paced environment and be committed to maintaining the highest standards of food safety and quality.
Qualifications & Experience:- Proven track record as a Technical Manager in a food‑related FMCG environment (essential).
- Degree in Food Science, Food Technology, or equivalent experience.
- Excellent knowledge of HACCP, BRCGS, and retailer codes of practice.
- Strong knowledge of food legislation standards.
- Experience with raw material approval, supplier management, and product specifications.
- Strong technical writing skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Strong leadership and organisational skills.
- Excellent problem‑solving and decision‑making ability.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Flexible, self‑motivated, and committed to personal development.
