Join to apply for the PCN Pharmacy Technician role at Charnwood GP Network Ltd. We are expanding our pharmacy technician team with two vacancies available for full-time or part-time candidates. One vacancy is based at Rosebery Medical Centre in Loughborough, and the other works across practices within the Soar Valley area. You will be embedded within GP practice sites with a Lead PCN Pharmacist to support your role and development. We offer access to CPD courses and regular training in our pharmacy team meetings led by three Senior PCN Pharmacists.
The Pharmacy Technicians will work alongside current technicians and Pharmacists to promote best practice in repeat prescribing, repeat dispensing, medicines reconciliation, medicines optimisation, waste reduction, and patient medicines usage. The role may include leading up-skilling for Practice Receptionists and Medication Clerks to enhance their roles. Provisional interview dates are expected in the week commencing 4 August 2025.
Responsibilities
- Carry out Medicines Reconciliations for new patients, care home patients, and patients recently discharged from hospital; update patient records and raise queries with a GP or prescriber as needed.
- Support Clinical Pharmacists with Medication Reviews using preparatory templates or by sourcing resources such as patient information leaflets or follow-up contacts with patients or their Community Pharmacy.
- Understand the Leicestershire Shared Care Protocol system and work within it, communicating with Secondary Care colleagues as needed for Shared Care prescribing.
- Support antimicrobial stewardship and optimise local antibiotic prescribing.
- Assist practice medication teams with patient contacts regarding medication changes; liaise with Community Pharmacies for out-of-stock item alternatives and communicate changes to staff or patients.
- Respond to queries from patients and practice staff regarding acute and repeat prescriptions in a timely, professional manner.
- Provide technical and administrative support to optimise prescribing processes, reduce administrative burden for prescribers, and reduce medication wastage.
- Provide on-the-job or scheduled training to help teams develop; promote Electronic Repeat Dispensing and online ordering.
- Develop strong working relationships with PCN clinical pharmacists, practice administrative teams, and other MDT members to support the PCN’s development and meet indicators (DES/IIF).
- Highlight changes in prescribing policy or guidance and help practices implement necessary changes.
- Understand local Prescribing Quality (QIPP) schemes, QOF targets, and other local enhanced services affecting prescribing policies.
- Engage in prescribing audits or Quality Improvement projects as identified by the practice or PCN/Federation; be aware of CQC expectations regarding prescribing policies.
- Use practice clinical systems to perform prescribing-related searches and extract/manipulate data as needed.
Qualifications
- Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) as a Pharmacy Technician is required.
- Commitment to undertake the 18-month Primary Care Pharmacy Education Pathway (PCPEP) unless already held or exempted by CPPE.
- A working knowledge of primary care and GP clinical systems is advantageous; training will be provided as needed.
