The Role

This is a great opportunity to join Charnwood Borough Council’s Financial Services team as a Senior Accountancy Assistant. You will support the delivery of high-quality accountancy services across revenue and capital accounting, helping the Council manage public money effectively and make informed financial decisions.

Working with the Group Accountants for HRA and Capital, you will help prepare and monitor budgets, analyse financial performance, investigate variances, complete reconciliations and support year-end processes. You will also maintain key financial records, including the capital asset register, Section 106 records and IFRS 16 lease accounting information. This is a varied role with plenty of opportunity to work with colleagues across the Council, including budget holders, service managers, auditors and external organisations. Your work will directly support effective financial planning, reporting and service delivery for the council.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the preparation, monitoring and reporting of revenue and capital budgets.
  • Analyse financial information and help budget holders understand performance, forecasts and variances.
  • Complete reconciliations and maintain accurate financial records, including control accounts and the capital asset register.
  • Support year-end closedown, final accounts and preparation of the Statement of Accounts.
  • Maintain Section 106 and IFRS 16 accounting records and respond to related queries.
  • Provide information for audits, government returns and capital funding bids.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across the Council to promote strong financial management and customer-focused service delivery.

The Person

We are looking for someone who is organised, accurate and confident working with financial information. You will be analytical, proactive and able to explain financial information clearly to colleagues with different levels of financial knowledge. You will be part-qualified CCAB, fully AAT qualified, or able to demonstrate equivalent relevant experience. Experience of monthly accounting, financial reporting, budget monitoring, reconciliations and financial systems is important. Knowledge of capital accounting, asset registers, year-end closedown or local authority finance would be an advantage. You will be confident using Microsoft Office, especially Excel, and able to manage a varied workload to deadlines. You will also be a team player who builds positive working relationships and takes pride in providing a reliable, customer-focused finance service.

The benefits of working with us:

  • Agile working for many roles
  • Generous annual leave of between 35.5 and 40.5 days of leave (depending on length of service), inclusive of bank holidays.
  • Most services are closed over Christmas.
  • Opportunities for professional development linked to many roles.
  • Access to the Local Government Pension Scheme
  • Free parking
  • We are a Disability Confident Employer and proud signatories of the Armed Forces Covenant's Employer Recognition Gold Award.
  • We prioritise the well-being and engagement of our employees through internal groups such as the Staff Forum, Health and Wellbeing Group and Equality Working Group.
