Role Overview
HS2 Ltd is seeking a Senior Security Systems Engineer to lead the development, assurance, and delivery of physical security systems across the entire HS2 railway infrastructure both on the line of route and in railway stations. Working closely with the Lead Security Systems Engineer, you will contribute to the development of standards, requirements, architectures, and technical specifications for systems including Video Surveillance, Access Control, Intruder Detection, and Physical Security Information Management (PSIM). You will ensure designs and constructed assets meet HS2 requirements, provide technical assurance, and support resolution of issues as they arise.
The role also requires strong project delivery/management processes such as Design Management, Interface Management, Risk Management, and Change Management (ensuring contractors keep to scope and don't overspend or cause scope creep).
What You’ll Be Doing
- The physical security requirements have been gathered and are mature – we are moving into project delivery stage therefore activities will include technical design assurance, interface management between several security contracts and other system contracts, help solve complex integration issues and ensuring.
- You will support security system solutions from concept through to delivery, including proof-of-concept work, requirements definition, and technical assurance.
- You will coordinate with multiple engineering disciplines to ensure physical security systems are fully integrated with HS2 infrastructure.
- Providing technical input to work packages to ensure solutions meet operational, environmental, programme, and budget requirements.
- Managing interfaces with third‑party systems, including British Transport Police and Network Rail.
- Supporting risk management activities and providing technical guidance to HS2 teams, suppliers, and stakeholders.
- Supporting suppliers through the engineering delivery of security systems packages.
About You
We’re looking for a technically strong and collaborative engineer with experience in physical security systems for complex infrastructure projects – critical national infrastructure – rail, airports, nuclear, power stations, water / utility etc. You will be comfortable balancing technical, commercial, and programme considerations, and communicating complex technical issues to a wide range of stakeholders. We welcome candidates from clients, consultancies, and manufacturers.
- Ability to develop clear, robust, and traceable technical requirements and provide effective technical assurance.
- Experience acting as a discipline specialist or subject matter expert, supporting delivery teams across technical and commercial areas.
- Strong understanding of standards, safety, and environmental requirements, with the ability to manage technical risk and competing priorities.
- Knowledge of physical security systems across the design, construction, and integration lifecycle, including future‑proofing.
- Experience working within large, multi‑disciplinary project teams and engaging effectively with stakeholders.
- Qualified Engineer, with knowledge of CDM and CSM‑RA (or equivalent regulated framework) experience working on critical national infrastructure.
