The Compliance and Risk (C&R) Team is based in London and led by the firm’s General Counsel. The team advises on all legal and regulatory duties, including financial crime compliance, SRA STaRS, risk management, client engagement terms, complaints and claims, internal investigations, insurance, governance, external vendor contracts and data privacy. The legal team currently comprises nine lawyers and two paralegals.
Role: 9‑month fixed‑term contract.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Answer queries from clients, partners, fee earners and other support staff about CDD requirements.
- Carry out searches against the HM Treasury consolidated sanctions list (sanctions screening).
- Carry out searches to determine whether a client is a politically exposed person (PEP) and prepare emails for senior management approval.
- Research adverse press about prospective clients and assess its relevance.
- Use databases such as World Check, Companies House, Orbis and Experian to obtain CDD information.
- Carry out risk assessments at client inception and when CDD records are updated to identify higher risk of money laundering.
- Carry out CDD for a full range of clients including individuals, companies and trusts, analyse provided material and advise if further information is needed.
- Comply with all relevant legal and regulatory obligations including the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) Standards and Regulations, and Principles.
- Carry out ongoing PEP monitoring and sanctions screening for payments using Worldcheck.
- Assist with file audits.
- Perform administrative tasks such as keeping the team’s filing up to date, archiving and data entry.
- Conduct conflicts searches where appropriate, report results to partners or fee earners.
Skills and Experience
- Previous experience with Elite and other AML databases would be an advantage.
- Degree qualified.
- Interest in anti‑money laundering and counter‑terrorist financing work.
- Proficient in Excel, Word and Outlook.
