Based across Charles Russell Speechlys’ Cheltenham and London offices, the Corporate Restructuring and Insolvency (CRI) team comprises seven partners and six associates at the 1-5 PQE level and three trainee solicitors. The team has specialist expertise in all aspects of CRI, with services including:
- Restructuring of solvent and insolvent companies including debt restructuring, refinancings, debt for equity swaps, distressed investing, loan to own strategies and distressed M&A.
- Schemes of arrangement and restructuring plans.
- Pre‑formal insolvency advice and planning.
- Advice on directors’ duties and liabilities in relation to distressed or insolvent companies.
- Formal insolvencies, including company voluntary arrangements, administrations, liquidations (solvent or insolvent) and bankruptcies.
- Security reviews on existing or proposed loans.
- Strategic acquisitions of insolvent businesses and assets from insolvency practitioners.
- Advice to investors in distressed or insolvent companies.
- Litigation and recovery actions.
- Asset tracing.
- LPA Receiverships.
- Cross‑border insolvency and COMI issues.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Assisting with developing and maintaining client relationships and growing the CRI practice.
- Drafting and managing documents and supervising junior team members.
- Assisting the team with all stages of restructuring and insolvency matters, with a focus on non‑contentious work, including general case management.
- Providing advice on all aspects of restructuring and insolvency matters, including enforcement options, to directors, companies, lenders and other stakeholders.
- Liaising with stakeholders (e.g., clients, counsel, and other firms).
- Managing matters with limited supervision as appropriate.
- Actively engaging in business development and knowledge management.
- Complying with all relevant legal and regulatory obligations including the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) Standards and Regulations, and Principles.
Person Specification
- Have strong commercial acumen and be client focused.
- Be willing to be part of a dynamic and growing team with good career prospects.
- Have a strong academic background and excellent written and verbal communication and organisational skills.
- Have trained with a large regional commercial practice or City firm.
- Have experience of predominantly non‑contentious insolvency and restructuring matters, both corporate and personal (although candidates with experience of one or more of these areas of focus will be considered).
- Be technically excellent.
- Be willing to take on early responsibility and opportunities to develop client relationships.
- Be a personable team player and willing to work as part of teams based in different locations.
