At our world class preclinical facility in Elphinstone, Tranent (close to Edinburgh), our Department of Veterinary Services provides expert advice on animal health and welfare in a diverse mix of laboratory and farm animal species. Acting as a deputy Named Veterinary Surgeon in accordance with the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act, you will provide clinical care services to the broad range of species at our site in Tranent. As a laboratory animal veterinarian, you are the advocate for the animals; you will use your clinical and interpersonal skills to ensure delivery of the highest standards of welfare, ethical consideration, and compliance in association with the Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Body.

You will assist in the conduct of clinical work across site, including medical and surgical case management, as well as supporting our studies by provision of specialist veterinary services in fields such as anaesthesia, surgery, and ophthalmology. Job Qualifications

  • Eligibility for membership of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and relevant clinical work experience is essential.
  • You will have graduated with a Veterinary degree and have good observational and fine motor skills.
  • You will have established skills in medicine and surgery translatable to the species you will be working with and the drive to expand your skillset.
  • You will have the confidence and ability to communicate effectively with internal and external clients, as well as regulatory bodies.
  • Previous experience in the laboratory animal field would be advantageous, although full training will be provided.
  • Participation in an out of hours on-call rota will be required, although this is not onerous.
