A well-capitalised energy trading platform is seeking a Shift Trading Manager to provide day-time leadership and operational oversight to a 24/7 power trading desk covering GB and ISEM markets, with growing exposure to BESS and flexible assets. This is not a shift trading role. The successful candidate will work standard business hours and will be accountable for the performance, discipline and effectiveness of multiple rotating shift traders operating around the clock.

The Role

You will own the operational management of the shift trading function, acting as the senior point of accountability for execution quality, risk adherence and decision-making standards across all shifts. You will set expectations, review performance, manage incidents and ensure the desk consistently delivers against strategy, even when you are not physically present. The role suits someone with a strong personal trading background who has moved into leadership and understands how short-term desks actually function in live markets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a team of 24/7 shift traders covering GB and ISEM power markets
  • Set standards for execution, escalation and risk management across all shifts
  • Oversee real-time portfolio optimisation across wholesale, balancing and ancillary markets, including BESS
  • Review shift performance, incidents, P&L and risk usage, intervening where necessary
  • Act as the primary escalation point for major market, system or operational events
  • Ensure consistent handovers, documentation and market coverage
  • Work closely with senior traders and asset teams to align dispatch with strategy
  • Drive trader development, training and capability uplift
  • Support hiring, onboarding and performance management of shift traders
  • Improve tools, processes and controls across the trading operation

Required Experience

  • 5+ years of active short-term power trading experience
  • Deep knowledge of GB power markets and ISEM exposure
  • Proven experience leading or managing trading teams
  • Strong understanding of intraday, balancing and ancillary services
  • Exposure to BESS optimisation or automated trading highly desirable
  • Strong risk and compliance mindset

Profile

  • Credible operator with real trading experience
  • Calm, structured and decisive
  • Trusted by traders and senior stakeholders
  • Comfortable taking accountability for a 24/7 operation without working shifts
