Team members work closely with vessel owners and operators to support smooth cargo and vessel movements. This is a full-time, hybrid Shipping Agent role based in Sittingbourne. The Shipping Agent will coordinate daily shipping operations, including preparing and processing documentation for incoming and outgoing vessels and cargo. Responsibilities include liaising with vessel operators, the terminal, vessel Captains and crew, and various customs and port authorities to ensure timely and compliant ship movements. The role involves tracking and updating ship movement status, and maintaining accurate records in company systems. The Shipping Agent will also communicate with customers and internal teams to provide updates, arrange shipping and berthing schedules, and support smooth port operations, including the boarding of arriving and/or departing vessels. After which the Shipping Agent will then be involved with the accounting side, receiving invoices and preparing FDAs to be sent to the owner/operator in a timely manner.
Qualifications/Experience
- Although no qualifications or experience are necessary as full training will be given, a keen interest in ships and the industry is essential, as well as a very good work ethic.
- Ships Agency is a 24/7, 365 day a year industry and the right candidate must be fully able to take on that challenge.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, as agency work involves speaking with ships crew, ship owners and managers, and terminal staff regarding ship movements.
- Good basic PC knowledge of emails, Excel, Word and other standard office applications.
- Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple vessel calls and deadlines.
- Previous experience in maritime matters is preferred; but not essential.
- To be able to be on out of hours call (shift basis) and attend to any unforeseen issues at any hour from the early hours and through the weekends.
- The ability to work closely in a small, friendly, kind, and hard working team.
- A car is essential, as the dock itself is cut off from public transport links.
