Established over 35 years ago, Charles Day (Steels) Ltd has grown to become one of the UK’s largest and most diverse profiling and cutting firms. Due to continued growth we are looking for energetic and driven people to join our vibrant team to help build on our already industry leading reputation. We are a third-generation family run business with a belief that no‑one should feel like a small cog in a big machine. Our people are our most important resource and we aim to support and encourage development in our fast paced yet friendly environment.

The successful candidate(s) will be responsible for programming our onsite CNC 3D Waterjet, Flamecutting and Press Brake machines. Training is available to learn programming on Laser, Flame and Waterjet machines if not already proficient. The role involves supporting sales staff with order confirmations and feedback, and ensuring production efficiency through nesting and time planning. They will be expected to converse politely and efficiently with all internal staff from the sales team through to final inspection and dispatch team, in addition to speaking directly to customers to support with technical inquiries. The ability to work well in a team is essential, but candidates must also be confident to work from their own initiative to problem solve, manage their time and workload effectively, and act in the best interests of the business always. This requires interpersonal and organisational skills with a strong attention to detail.

The ideal candidate will have good maths and English skills, be computer literate with experience with the Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word & Outlook etc). CAD experience and the ability to read and produce technical drawings is essential, as is experience in programming cutting machines (laser, flame, waterjet) and press brakes. Experience with Solidworks is preferred but not essential. Equally experience with manufacturer specific Bystronic, Trumpf and Waterjet Sweden software would stand a candidate in good stead.

The key responsibility of the successful candidate is to programme the cutting machines and press brakes ensuring efficiencies are achieved throughout the production process whilst supporting the sales team in winning enquiries:

  • Programming Bystronic Press Brake Operations
  • Programming Flame cutting machinery
  • Efficient part nesting on all sheet sizes for maximum Yield
  • Support and problem solve customer queries with the sales team
  • Effective time management and proactive organisational skills
  • Management of job orders and process scheduling
  • Identifying possible production improvements and increasing process efficiencies

Ultimately, a willingness to learn new skills is required as full training will be given to suitable candidates. We hire largely on attitude.
