The Urgent and Emergency Care team, DMH comprises of ED, SDEC and AMU. Significant changes to the Front of House with the addition of Same Day Emergency Care and the expansion of the medical workforce make us an attractive place for anyone who wishes to experience true teamwork between clinicians, managers and patients. We believe this is an opportunity to join a dynamic & established consultant team who lead from the frontline, supported by an experienced middle grade tier and skilled nursing team, providing outstanding 24‑hour care.
We are now seeking applications from Consultants in Emergency Medicine to be based at DMH. This is a fantastic opportunity for applicants who can demonstrate a track record of commitment to education. Main duties of the post will be as follows:
- Provide Emergency Medicine services at Darlington Memorial Hospital.
- Deliver a comprehensive clinical service together with consultant colleagues.
- Take continuous responsibility for the care of patients in charge and participate in planning future service development.
- Supervise and assist junior and middle grade medical staff and Emergency Nurse Practitioners.
- Act as Team Leader in resuscitations of seriously traumatised patients and those with critical illness.
- Conduct review clinics.
- Provide daily Consultant presence (job plans under review).
- Offer telephone advice or attend the department when on call on a 1‑in‑8 basis.
- Participate in the senior doctor rota performing clinical duties and acting as medical coordinator.
- Assist in the smooth integration of the Emergency Department and acute services.
About Us: We provide services from two acute sites – Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham – and a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland. We also care from community hospitals and 80+ community settings, including patient homes. Applications from disabled and Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) candidates are particularly welcomed.
Job Responsibilities:
- In addition to the main duties, if trained in Paediatric Emergency Medicine, involvement in the development of a front‑of‑house Paediatric service.
- Provide comprehensive clinical service to consultant colleagues and to General Practitioners.
- Participate in strategic service planning and exchange necessary information.
- Accountable to the Care Group Clinical Director for efficient use of resources.
- Participate in the Emergency Medicine on‑call rota as part of a consultant team.
- Provide cover during colleagues' leave.
- Research activities encouraged; limited funding may be available.
- Administrative duties: care continuity, attendance at Care Group and Departmental meetings.
- Professional supervision and management of junior staff to maintain care standards.
- Participate in postgraduate teaching and training of all grades of staff.
- Maintain CPD and engage in clinical audit.
- Participate in clinical governance and adhere to national and local guidelines.
- Provide free opinion and statement of facts on claims against the Trust.
- Maintain highest clinical standards for all Emergency Department patients.
- Manage day‑to‑day Emergency Department operations.
- Ability to lead and operate as an effective team member.
- Lead by example, manage sickest patients, engage juniors and ensure adequate patient flow.
Person Specification:
- Special Skills & Knowledge – Essential: Good clinical skills including management of acute medical admissions. Ability to care for patients admitted with head injury not requiring neurosurgical intervention. Offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems within the service. Understands factors affecting patient safety. Experience and understanding of audit and conducting clinical audit. Demonstrates awareness of developing situations in clinical environment. Solves problems & makes timely decisions even when under pressure. Uses IT to enhance patient care.
- Desirable: Successful completion of Medical ALS, MIMMS. Use evidence base to support decision making. Experience in one or more subspecialty areas of Emergency Medicine. Experienced in use of CPAP or non‑invasive ventilation.
- Experience – Essential: Experience in Emergency Medicine. Experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems. Supervision, training and teaching of trainees. Evidence of career planning through appraisal process. Up‑to‑date professional development.
- Desirable Experience: Published research or audit. Instructor on Generic Instructor Course or ATLS instructor course. Experience using simulation‑based training. Instructor on life support course. RITA C/ARCP outcome 1 at annual appraisals. Experience in primary care or pre‑hospital environment. Experience in critical care or acute medicine at registrar/specialist trainee level.
- Special Requirements – Essential: Management Experience. Awareness of managerial role of a consultant in the NHS. Demonstrate NHS management skills (organise and prioritise work). Delegate to trainee/non‑consultant appropriately. Work effectively on strategic or long‑term issues with colleagues. Lead team and operate as effective team member. Demonstrate successful discharge of managerial responsibilities. Planning, management and organisation skills. Teaching experience (postgraduate and undergraduate). Interest in teaching all grades of hospital and professional staff.
- Desirable Special Requirements: Successful discharge of managerial responsibilities (registrar). Understanding of legislation relating to employment and good practice. Formal management training or teamwork and leadership training. Inspire and motivate others to deliver care effectively and efficiently.
- Qualifications – Essential: MB ChB or equivalent. FRCEM or equivalent. PMETB Approval. Successful completion of at least two of ALS/ATLS, A/EPLS.
- Qualifications – Desirable: Postgraduate qualification in Paediatrics (especially Paediatric Emergency Medicine), Geriatric Medicine or General Practice. Certificate of medical education or equivalent. Successful completion of an instructor course.
- Statutory Registration – Essential: Full and specialist registration with GMC (and Licence to Practice). Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or within 6 months of completing CCT in Specialty at interview.
