Responsibilities
The post holder will undertake clinical work in conjunction with their clinical colleagues and other professional staff to maintain and develop Anaesthetic Services and develop specialist skills in accordance with the needs of the department. The post holder will have a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and will contribute to the proper functioning of the Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine. Administrative duties related to patient care, supervising junior medical staff, and ensuring continuity of patient care are expected. The post holder will participate in teaching and clinical governance activities in line with national and local guidelines. Research and clinical audit activities will be encouraged, and the post holder will be supported to develop services, courses and undertake innovation. The post holder may be required to deputise in the absence of colleagues and perform additional duties in emergency and unforeseen circumstances to ensure continuity of patient care.
The department provides anaesthetic services for elective and emergency patients at DMH, BAH, UHND and Shotley Bridge with 11 operating theatres at DMH covering multiple specialties. On-call commitments are 1:12 for Theatres and Obstetrics; Intensive Care on-call is provided by a separate Consultant Anaesthetist with good teamwork between staff. Weekend on-calls are typically 24 hours with junior support in a 3-tier rota.

Salary: £109,725 to £145,478 a year (YC72 Pay Scale) pro rata
Qualifications
- MBBS, MBChB or equivalent
- Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists or equivalent
Essential Registration & Licensing
- GMC full registration
- Specialist Registration with the GMC in Anaesthesia
- On or within 6 months of CCT date
- Evidence of appraisal and GMC revalidation
Desirable
- Specialist registration with the RCOA
- ALS, ATLS, APLS/EPLS or similar qualifications
Experience & Skills
- Experience in providing anaesthesia for the specialties provided by the Trust
- Experience in acute pain interventions
- Audit experience and knowledge of clinical governance
- Ability to train, supervise trainees, and organise own work; strong teaching and management capabilities
Other Requirements
- Full UK driving licence and ability to attend scheduled list start times
- Willingness to undertake elective sessions across sites
- Commitment to research, teaching, and clinical governance
