Description of Role

As a Theatre Consultant – Technical Systems Designer with an AV focus, you will be responsible for design, documentation and commissioning of audiovisual and stage lighting systems on our projects. You will work with a multidisciplinary team, including team leads, theatre designers, stage equipment designers, experience designers and acousticians, to deliver bespoke design solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the production of drawings, specifications and reports; research new products; develop design principles and system information.
  • Deliver work to the highest quality standards and ensure compliance with legislation, guidance and best practice.
  • Support project delivery, foster teamwork and maintain a collaborative, positive atmosphere.
  • Research industry developments and participate in the Training & Development programme.
  • Meet with clients to evaluate needs and present holistic design solutions, balancing functionality and budget.
  • Describe system functionality for various audiences – designers, technicians and engineers.
  • Coordinate with architectural and engineering teams to integrate required infrastructure and support for lighting or AV systems.
  • Provide cost projections and work with manufacturers/distributors for market testing.
  • Conduct value engineering to reduce cost while preserving performance.
  • Participate in site visits for commissioning, testing and construction progress.
  • Travel internationally or overseas when required.
  • Collaborate with Team Leaders on project work plans, goals and deliverables.
  • Share knowledge and contribute to the development of internal design resources.

Qualifications and Key Skills

Essential

  • Minimum 4 years of experience in live performance venues.
  • Minimum 2 years as a technical systems designer.
  • Proficiency in computer drafting (Vectorworks, AutoCAD or REVIT).
  • Professional experience with Microsoft Office and GSuite.
  • Professional experience with Adobe Acrobat or Bluebeam.

Desirable

  • Excellent verbal, written and visual communication skills.
  • Strong self‑management and planning abilities.
  • In-depth knowledge of audiovisual equipment, stage lighting infrastructure, networking, and systems integration.
  • Background in theatre design, technical theatre training or relevant higher education.
  • Industry training such as AVIXA.
  • Experience as a primary designer for completed projects (design, documentation, construction, commissioning).
  • Practical knowledge of lighting and AV theory, networks and infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with theatre health & safety and electrical regulations.
  • Graphic design and layout skills, adherence to design standards, brand consistency.
  • Experience with stage lighting or AV installations in new construction or renovation.
  • Experience working with distributed global teams across time zones.
  • Interest in live performance, broadcast and events.
  • Experience with temporary or permanent architectural lighting schemes.
  • Experience with temporary or permanent immersive audiovisual installations.
