Chapman Tate Associates are working with an innovative and growing Software House that is looking for a Research Software Engineer to join their team.

The key requirement for this role is strong Python development experience. If you’re a confident Python developer who enjoys working on complex technical challenges, this could be an excellent opportunity to work at the intersection of software engineering and cutting-edge research.

Experience with Linux and High-Performance Computing (HPC) would be highly desirable, but isn't essential.

What will you be doing?

You'll work closely with researchers, academics and technical teams, helping them develop, optimise and support software used across a range of research disciplines. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and supporting software primarily using Python
  • Working within Linux-based environments
  • Supporting and optimising workloads on HPC platforms
  • Working directly with researchers to understand technical requirements
  • Providing coding support, technical guidance and troubleshooting
  • Delivering technical training and coaching
  • Creating technical documentation and development best practices
  • Collaborating with customers and internal technical teams
  • Keeping up to date with developments across Python, RSE, Linux and HPC

What are we looking for?

Essential:

  • Strong commercial Python development experience
  • Good software engineering fundamentals
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • A genuine interest in research computing and technical problem solving

Desirable:

  • Linux experience
  • HPC experience
  • Experience with HPC clusters or job schedulers
  • C/C++, Fortran or other research computing languages
  • Experience within academic, scientific or research environments
  • Cloud or large-scale computing experience
