Department Description

We commission bold, award-winning, and channel-defining unscripted content across Channel 4, E4, and our streaming platform, working with the best new and established talent both on and off-screen. Our Reality slate includes shows such as The Great British Bake Off, Married at First Sight, Made in Chelsea, and Celebs Go Dating, and we are developing distinctive formats like Tempting Fortune, The Inheritance, and The Hunt. In Entertainment, we deliver comedy formats such as Taskmaster, The Last Leg, 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, Late Night Lycett, and Stand Up To Cancer fundraising events.

4skills x Commissioning Training Programme

This role is an excellent opportunity for anyone looking to build a career in TV commissioning, particularly in Reality and Entertainment. As part of Channel 4’s 4Skills training programme, you’ll develop practical skills, gain industry insights, and build professional connections. The programme provides training, mentorship, and industry experience to succeed in TV commissioning.

Job Purpose

This Junior Commissioning Editor role is part of Channel 4’s 4Skills training programme. You will gain hands-on experience in editorial and commissioning within Reality and Entertainment, mentored by a Senior Commissioning Editor, from content development to final delivery. You will build skills to progress in commissioning while contributing to Channel 4’s Reality and Entertainment programming.

Am I Eligible to Apply?

  • The role is suited for senior members of the production and freelance community.
  • Must be based within a commutable distance to the Channel 4 hub office (Glasgow, Leeds or Manchester).
  • 3-6 years’ experience; recent credits at a minimum Series Producer level.

Key Responsibilities

  • Training and Mentorship: Work with a Senior Commissioning Editor to gain practical experience in the commissioning process, from pitches to final delivery. Receive hands-on training and guidance to understand the commissioning landscape and build a portfolio of Reality and Entertainment programming.
  • Content Evaluation: Review and provide detailed editorial feedback on returning series, ensuring quality, audience engagement, and compliance with Channel 4’s editorial standards. Shadow experienced editors and learn to recommend improvements.
  • Collaboration: Work across departments (legal, compliance, marketing, press, scheduling) to understand the full commissioning process. Provide guidance and support for junior team members over time.
  • Commissioning New Content: Assist colleagues in sourcing and commissioning new Reality and Entertainment shows. Review pitches, attend meetings, and support the selection process.
  • Diversity & Inclusion: Gain experience with independent production companies, including those based outside London. Build relationships with diverse talent and production teams across the UK.
  • Financial & Legal Knowledge: Learn about budget management, contracts, and OFCOM regulations and how these influence content.
  • Industry Insight: Stay informed about industry trends, audience preferences, and evolving regulations. Participate in strategy discussions to keep Channel 4’s content competitive.

Essential Experience & Skills

  • TV Production or Development Experience: Background in TV production or development, ideally with Reality and/or Entertainment programming at a minimum Series Producer level. Strong editorial judgment and passion for TV.
  • Interest in Reality and Entertainment Content: Understanding of content trends and what resonates with Channel 4’s audience.
  • Adaptability and Learning Mindset: Willingness to learn and grow in a dynamic environment.
  • Experience with Independent Productions: Beneficial to have experience working with independent production companies outside London.
  • Knowledge of TV Production Regulations: Basic understanding of financial, legal, and compliance aspects, including OFCOM regulations; role includes learning these areas as you progress.
  • Communication & Relationship Building: Strong communication, diplomacy, and ability to manage multiple stakeholders.
  • Resilience and Drive: Self-sufficiency, resilience, and motivation to handle competing priorities.
  • PowerPoint / Presentation Tools: Proficiency with PowerPoint and Canva.

Salary

Basic salary per annum starting from: £70,438.00

Work Style

Hybrid working: From September 2023, Channel 4 has operated a 60/40 pattern (three office days per week). Offices are open five days a week.
