The Opportunity

Some roles give you a framework to follow. This one gives you the opportunity to shape it!

We’re supporting an established business with the appointment of a Risk & Compliance Manager.

This is a broad role with real ownership, close access to senior leadership and the chance to see your work influence how the business operates.

You’ll lead a small function covering enterprise risk, AML, data protection and governance.

You’ll help senior colleagues make informed decisions while making sure the everyday compliance work gets done well.

It will suit someone who enjoys building things, solving problems and working directly with people across a business.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a practical operational risk framework with clear ownership, controls and reporting.
  • Give senior management and the Board a clear view of the risks that need their attention.
  • Oversee AML arrangements and the work of an external due diligence provider.
  • Provide practical support to the MLRO through sound assessments and clear recommendations.
  • Lead compliance monitoring and control reviews. Make sure agreed actions are completed.
  • Maintain data protection arrangements and advise on privacy risks arising from technology, suppliers and business change.
  • Keep policies and training relevant, understandable and useful.
  • Manage and develop a Risk & Compliance Analyst.
  • Bring in specialist external advice where needed and turn it into practical action.

About You

You’ll ideally bring broad risk and compliance experience with practical AML knowledge and a sound understanding of data protection.

You’ll be comfortable forming your own view, explaining your reasoning and challenging senior colleagues when necessary.

Just as importantly, you’ll listen, understand commercial pressures and help people find a workable way forward.

We’re particularly interested in evidence that you have

  • Taken personal responsibility for a broad remit within a small team.
  • Built or developed risk frameworks, controls or compliance programmes.
  • Turned technical requirements into processes people can follow.
  • Prioritised competing demands and delivered work yourself.
  • Built credibility with senior management and supported colleagues with less specialist knowledge.

Experience within legal, professional services or even property would be useful.

We’re also interested in candidates from financial services or other regulated businesses who can apply their experience in a smaller organisation.

Why Consider?

You’ll have scope to shape the function, develop a small team and build lasting relationships across the business.

The work offers variety and visible responsibility.

You’ll be close enough to the detail to understand what needs to change and close enough to senior leadership to help make it happen.

Edinburgh is the preferred base.

Glasgow will also be considered.

The role is primarily office based in the city centre with some travel between offices and scope to discuss flexibility.
