Underwriting & Pricing Director

Location: North West (Hybrid - 1 day per week in the office)

The Opportunity

An ambitious and fast-growing specialist insurance platform is seeking an experienced Underwriting & Pricing Director to lead underwriting and pricing performance across its UK personal lines portfolio. This is a senior leadership role combining technical underwriting expertise, advanced pricing capability and strong governance oversight within a delegated authority environment. The successful candidate will play a central role in driving profitable growth, improving pricing sophistication and ensuring robust portfolio performance.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, this position will work closely with underwriting, pricing, technology and analytics teams to deliver disciplined underwriting, data-driven decision making and strong regulatory governance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Underwriting & Pricing Leadership
    • Lead and shape underwriting and pricing strategy across the portfolio
    • Define underwriting appetite, referral frameworks and pricing governance standards
    • Enhance pricing sophistication, rating structures and risk segmentation approaches
    • Embed data-driven decision making across underwriting and pricing activities
    • Drive innovation in underwriting processes and product development
  • Governance, Controls & Compliance
    • Maintain strong underwriting and pricing governance aligned with FCA requirements including Consumer Duty
    • Ensure full compliance with delegated underwriting authority agreements
    • Lead underwriting and pricing oversight during carrier audits and due diligence reviews
    • Implement robust documentation, control frameworks and risk oversight processes
    • Ensure fair value assessments and pricing transparency remain central to decision making
  • Portfolio Performance
    • Own portfolio performance including loss ratio and overall profitability
    • Monitor pricing adequacy, claims trends and evolving risk exposures
    • Oversee exposure management, aggregation controls and concentration risk
    • Provide regular MI and portfolio insight to executive leadership and capacity providers
    • Support scenario modelling and stress testing to inform business decisions
  • Capacity Provider & Broker Engagement
    • Act as a senior underwriting and pricing contact for capacity providers
    • Support DUA negotiations, renewals and capacity expansion discussions
    • Maintain transparent communication of portfolio performance and pricing outcomes
    • Work closely with brokers and distribution partners to drive sustainable and profitable growth
  • Product & Pricing Development
    • Lead the development and refinement of insurance products and rating structures
    • Work alongside actuarial and analytics teams to validate and enhance pricing models
    • Ensure products remain competitive while maintaining technical pricing adequacy
    • Identify opportunities for innovation within specialist market segments
  • Data, Technology & Analytics
    • Champion the use of data, analytics and technology in underwriting and pricing
    • Oversee development of dashboards, predictive insights and portfolio optimisation tools
    • Ensure management information supports both commercial performance and regulatory compliance
    • Promote automation and efficiency across underwriting workflows
  • Leadership
    • Contribute to wider strategic planning and business growth initiatives
    • Work closely with Finance, Operations, Compliance, Claims and Technology teams
    • Support executive reporting, including board and investor updates where required
    • Build and develop high-performing underwriting and pricing teams

About You

You will be an experienced underwriting and pricing leader with strong technical expertise and commercial awareness within UK personal lines. You will likely bring:

  • Significant senior underwriting and pricing experience within personal lines insurance
  • Experience working within an MGA or delegated authority environment
  • Strong understanding of FCA regulation and Consumer Duty requirements
  • Proven experience managing portfolio performance and loss ratio optimisation
  • Experience working with pricing models, analytics and data-driven underwriting
  • Confidence engaging with capacity providers and distribution partners
  • Strong leadership capability with experience developing high-performing teams
