What You Will Do
The Process & Maintenance Lead is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of plant equipment, facilities, and infrastructure. This role combines engineering oversight with hands-on maintenance leadership, including responsibility for mechanical integrity, inspection and compliance, maintenance planning, contractor management, and project execution. The position ensures that all maintenance, inspection, and engineering activities are delivered in line with company standards, regulatory requirements, and production needs, while driving continuous improvement in asset reliability, safety, and cost performance.
Safety, Compliance & Engineering Integrity
- Ensure full compliance with company safety standards, site policies, and relevant legislation (e.g. COMAH, DSEAR, PUWER, PSSR).
- Maintain accountability for mechanical integrity and ageing plant management.
- Lead fitness-for-service assessments and ensure appropriate documentation and follow-up actions.
- Ensure all plant equipment complies with relevant engineering codes and standards (e.g. API, EEMUA).
- Participate in HAZOP, Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), and Pre-Start-up Safety Reviews (PSSR).
- Support and manage Management of Change (MoC) processes.
Maintenance & Reliability
- Plan, schedule, and coordinate all maintenance activities (preventive, corrective, and reactive).
- Ensure plant equipment is maintained in safe and efficient working order.
- Maintain and continuously improve the Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS), including asset registers and maintenance schedules.
- Monitor maintenance KPIs (e.g. overdue maintenance, downtime) and drive continuous improvement.
- Coordinate statutory inspections (e.g. pressure systems, lifting equipment, LEV, bulk tanks).
- Undertake or support troubleshooting and minor maintenance activities as required.
Projects & Engineering Delivery
- Lead and support capital projects, plant modifications, and equipment installations.
- Plan and coordinate plant outages and shutdowns in line with production requirements.
- Ensure engineering specifications, documentation, and approvals are properly managed.
- Supervise installation and commissioning of new or modified equipment.
Contractor & Vendor Management
- Coordinate and oversee third-party contractors undertaking maintenance, inspection, and project work.
- Ensure safe systems of work, permits, and risk assessments are implemented and followed.
- Act as Permit to Work Issuer where required.
- Liaise with vendors on equipment selection, availability, and cost.
- Support procurement of spares, services, and capital equipment.
Financial & Budget Management
- Prepare and manage maintenance and capital budgets.
- Monitor and control expenditure to ensure alignment with financial targets.
- Raise and manage purchase requisitions and purchase orders.
- Ensure accurate tracking of maintenance and project costs (labour, materials, contractors).
Systems, Audits & Continuous Improvement
- Maintain compliance with ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and site management systems.
- Ensure maintenance and engineering documentation is audit-ready.
- Support internal, customer, and regulatory audits.
- Participate in incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action implementation.
- Drive continuous improvement in maintenance practices, asset reliability, and energy efficiency.
Qualifications
- Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, or similar) or equivalent experience.
- Experience in plant engineering and/or maintenance within a process or COMAH environment.
- Strong knowledge of maintenance planning and execution.
- Experience managing contractors and coordinating site activities.
- Understanding of mechanical integrity, inspections, and regulatory compliance.
- Strong communication, coordination, and organisational skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work to deadlines.
- Experience with SAP and/or CMMS systems.
- Project management experience.
- IOSH / NEBOSH or equivalent safety qualification.
Physical Demands
This role requires working in a chemical manufacturing plant.
