The Head of Canada research will take on oversight of the Chambers' coverage of the Canadian legal sector, providing specialist knowledge on the market to Canadian law firms, clients, the Chambers research team, and the wider company. The Head of Canada would serve as the face of the Chambers Canada Guide, acting as both the internal and external key leader for this jurisdiction. The position will enhance the team's understanding of key work and trends in Canada and allow us to more effectively share knowledge and information across our markets. The Head of Canada will also be responsible for creating and executing a strategy to expand our coverage of the Canadian market, ensuring that growth targets for rankings and overall depth of research are met.
The successful candidate would be a full member of the senior North America research team, where you will collaborate closely with the Research Directors, Principal Research Specialists and Research Managers to oversee a dedicated team of North America research specialists. Together, you will set call and growth targets for researchers, evaluate ongoing research, and oversee editorial work and provide feedback during performance review periods. The Head of Canada will also serve as an external point of contact for law firms, including addressing queries, engaging with senior firm leadership, and staying on top of developments and trends in the field. The role affords the opportunity to engage in the highest level of research, and work with colleagues to drive innovation, set strategy and determine the overall direction of the Canada guide.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct research at the highest level of your area of expertise in the assigned jurisdictions, having overall responsibility for the quality of research, rankings and editorial in your specialist areas as directed.
- Work autonomously to develop your in-depth market research knowledge, sharing this knowledge across the team.
- Developing strategy to achieve annual growth targets for increasing the number of unique firms and individuals ranked, whilst maintaining quality of research.
- Keeping up to date with the development of the area of practice of your expertise across the work with focus on the assigned jurisdiction.
- Work within deadlines and balance the responsibilities of this multi-faceted role.
- Interview key players in the relevant legal practice area to gather information about law firms' strategies and plans.
- Assessing the quality of the research and editorial of researchers regarding your area of expertise, identifying areas of improvement and providing feedback to Research Directors and Managers.
- Influence and persuading of all those conducting research within their specialised area, using data and analytics to identify growth opportunities.
Internal Knowledge Sharing and Cross-Team Collaboration
- Regularly communicating with the senior team and researchers the latest updates, developments, and trends in the market.
- Coaching core researchers in the areas of your specialism, providing guidance, information regarding best practice.
- Collaborating with Learning and Development in the planning and delivery of training to researchers concerning your area of expertise.
- Knowledge sharing: running internal seminars and knowledge sharing sessions for your specialism.
- To liaise with D&I, Events, Marketing, Sales, Technology and senior leadership (when necessary) in order to drive the commercial growth, research participation and market penetration of our products.
Commercial Responsibilities
- Sharing knowledge with the external market via webinars and articles for our website.
- To support the commercial team by providing updates on new research areas and benefits, passing on sales leads etc.
- Demonstrate a commercial awareness as to where and how we can monetise our products better, with the support and corresponding recognition of other relevant business functions.
- Work closely with the Product Team on the continuing evolution of Chambers products.
- Acting as an ambassador and internal/external reference point for your area of specialism.
Skills and Experience
- Proven ability to manage and conduct research into technically complex practice areas.
- Proven ability to manage external and internal stakeholder relationships, including law firm leadership, CβSuite clients and internal commercial teams.
- Experience in managing and overseeing research output.
- Understanding of the Canadian legal market and core facets of corporate, commercial and disputes practice areas.
