Chacewater Garden Centre is a medium sized, independent garden centre just outside of Threemilestone in Truro. We have exciting plans for growth over the next 3 years and need an enthusiastic manager to help us along the journey. With no day ever the same, this role is perfect for someone looking for variety and excitement in their every day work life.

We are looking for a yard/maintenance manager with strong retail experience and a great commercial awareness. They must strive for exceptionally high standards and a great eye for detail to make our garden centre the best in Cornwall.

Although this role does involve a lot of maintenance, you must be able to understand that our customers always come first, and therefore this role will always be centred around that and predominately be retail focussed. You will have strong commercial awareness to understand the reporting and sales side of the business and be able to work the EPOS system effectively.

You will be responsible for a small team of 2 other full-time staff and any seasonal or weekend workers. You will have great leadership qualities to manage and push your team to get the best results. You will be required to organise the maintenance teams daily, weekly and monthly jobs and projects and can also source outside tradesmen if required. You will be required to discipline and/or support your team if required as well as manage their training requirements. Previous HR experience is essential to understand the disciplinary processes and procedures. You will be required to be the duty manager at times, sharing the responsibility with the shop and plant manager.

You will be responsible for the Health & Safety at the garden centre, carrying out risk assessments onto our online platform, ensuring that the health and safety of customers and employees is carried out at all times.

A big part of the job is to manage the warehousing of stock, especially the bigger items such as garden furniture and barbecues which play a large role in our business. You will be required to organise deliveries coming into the garden centre as well as customer deliveries going out.

We will require you to drive the forklift truck.

  • Excellent maintenance and DIY skills and competence – to include basic, plumbing, carpentry etc
  • Great problem solving skills and able to complete projects efficiently and in a suitable timeframe
  • Confident and friendly when dealing with customers
  • Understands the day to day running of a retail business
  • Retail & customer service skills – including experience of using an EPOS system
  • Health & Safety Experience
  • HR experience and dealing with difficult or challenging employees

Salary £27,000 to £30,000 depending on experience

Full-time, Permanent, Monday to Friday.
