The Europe Newsgathering team is responsible for CGTN Europe's coverage of news and current affairs across the continent. The team commissions original journalism from staff correspondents and freelance reporters based in London and across Europe, delivering content for CGTN's television, digital and social media platforms. Coverage ranges from planned reporting to breaking news and major special events.
Job objectives:
- Managerial
- Deputise for the Director of Newsgathering and lead the team in their absence.
- Help manage the day-to-day operation and performance of the Newsgathering team.
- Support the management of freelance correspondents and stringers across Europe.
- Help maintain staffing rotas and ensure shifts are covered.
- Assist with recruitment of staff and freelance journalists when required.
- Take part in on-call duties, including weekends and public holidays.
- Editorial
- Help oversee daily newsgathering operations and coordinate coverage across Europe.
- Work closely with Output, Digital and Planning teams to deliver strong coverage across all platforms.
- Ensure commissioned reports meet high editorial standards.
- Coordinate with CGTN teams in Beijing, Washington and Nairobi to deliver seamless global coverage.
- Attend and chair editorial meetings as needed.
- Work with the Senior Planning Editors on daily, weekly and long-term coverage plans as well as specials.
- Ensure newsgathering priorities meet the needs of broadcast, digital and social media teams.
- Play a leading role in breaking news coverage and major developing stories.
- Assist the Director of Newsgathering in managing departmental budgets, ensuring resources are allocated effectively and expenditure remains within agreed limits.
- Help manage, mentor and develop editorial staff, fostering a high-performing newsroom culture and supporting professional growth and career development.
- Travel on assignment when required to help manage special coverage.
- Work with the Director of Newsgathering to strengthen CGTN Europe's reporting network and develop original journalism.
- Undertake other duties as required by senior management.
Person specification:
- Significant experience in newsgathering and newsroom leadership.
- At least 10 years experience in an international newsroom.
- Strong editorial judgement and knowledge of global news, current affairs and business with a keen interest in China.
- Experience managing teams in a fast-paced news environment.
- Proven ability to handle breaking news and work effectively under pressure.
- Excellent organisational and communication skills.
- A strong track record of delivering original journalism and news coverage.
- Experience working with correspondents, freelancers and international teams.
