At CGI, we partner with our UK Government client to modernise the digital systems that underpin the UK justice system. We are seeking a Technical Lead to shape and deliver the next phase of a critical new platform on this account. You will work at the forefront of the transformation—defining architecture, strengthening performance and scalability, and guiding secure, high‑quality delivery within a DevSecOps environment. This is an opportunity to influence a nationally significant system, lead technical direction within Agile squads and help ensure resilient, future‑ready services that support fair and efficient client services operations.
Due to the secure nature of the programme, you must hold, or be eligible to obtain, Security Check (SC) clearance. This is a hybrid position, but you will be required to work on CGI and client sites from time to time (locations include Bridgend, Solihull, London, Reading and Newcastle).
Your future duties and responsibilities:
- Work alongside the Solution Architect during the analysis and design phase, shaping interface definitions, non‑functional requirements and high‑ and low‑level designs to support the extension of an existing solution.
- Define volumetrics, performance considerations and data model updates, ensuring the platform can scale to meet increased demand while maintaining resilience and compliance.
- Act as Technical Lead within a self‑organising Agile squad, owning the technical backlog and guiding implementation in line with DevSecOps and “build it, run it” principles.
- Collaborate closely with our client’s Product Owners, architects and suppliers, embedding secure‑by‑design and test‑driven approaches, driving effective use of AI‑assisted development tools and ensuring transparent, accountable delivery within a multi‑supplier environment.
Key responsibilities:
- Define & Design – Lead HLD/LLD creation, interface specifications and NFR definition.
- Scale & Strengthen – Ensure performance, load and volumetric requirements are met.
- Lead & Deliver – Guide sprint teams in implementing backlog items using Agile practices.
- Secure & Assure – Embed secure coding, DevSecOps and test‑driven development.
- Collaborate & Govern – Work across HMCTS stakeholders and suppliers with transparency.
- Automate & Optimise – Utilise CI/CD, Kubernetes and AI‑assisted tooling to enhance efficiency.
To succeed, you will bring strong technical leadership experience within complex application environments, ideally in justice or public sector settings. You will have proven Java development expertise, experience defining system changes with business stakeholders and a strong understanding of non‑functional requirements, integration design and scalable architectures within Agile, multi‑supplier environments.
Essential qualifications:
- Strong Java development experience (e.g. Spring, Hibernate) and SQL/database design (DDL).
- Experience contributing to HLD/LLD and interface specifications.
- Experience with CI/CD tools and version control (Git/GitHub).
- Experience with Kubernetes and/or middleware configuration.
- Familiarity with secure coding practices and DevSecOps environments.
- Experience working in Agile squads using Jira and Confluence.
- Ability to work collaboratively across client and supplier teams.
