At CGI, you'll help shape one of Microsoft's most strategic healthcare and research platforms. As the appointed custodian of the Microsoft Azure Trusted Research Environment (TRE), we are enabling healthcare providers, life sciences organisations, research institutions and regulated industries to unlock the value of sensitive data securely in the cloud. This is a rare opportunity to technically lead and product steward Microsoft's open-source Azure TRE. You'll influence the platform roadmap, work directly with Microsoft engineering teams, engage with the wider open-source community, and help organisations accelerate research, innovation and patient outcomes through secure, governed cloud environments.
We're seeking a senior technologist who combines deep Azure engineering expertise with commercial awareness, stakeholder engagement skills and a passion for innovation. You'll operate at the intersection of platform engineering, product strategy, client engagement and business growth.
Due to the secure nature of this programme, candidates must hold UK Security Clearance or be eligible to obtain it. This is a hybrid UK-based position.
Your future duties and responsibilities:
- As Senior Platform Engineer and technical lead for Azure TRE, you'll be responsible for the ongoing stewardship, development and strategic evolution of the platform while supporting client adoption and service growth.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading the technical direction of the Azure TRE open-source platform, including roadmap development, code reviews, issue triage and release management.
- Architecting secure, scalable Azure environments using Terraform and Infrastructure as Code principles.
- Designing and maintaining GitHub Actions CI/CD pipelines, automated testing frameworks and release processes.
- Deploying and operating Azure services including AKS, Azure Firewall, Application Gateway, Cosmos DB, Service Bus, Key Vault and Container Registry.
- Designing and implementing secure networking, Zero Trust architectures, workspace isolation and Microsoft Entra ID integrations.
- Developing platform extensions, workspace templates and integrations with third-party research and analytics services.
- Acting as CGI's technical representative within the Azure TRE open-source community and Microsoft governance forums.
- Leading technical workshops, demonstrations, discovery sessions and executive briefings with clients and stakeholders.
- Supporting business development activities, proposals, solution shaping and managed service offerings built around Azure TRE.
- Contributing to the strategic evolution of CGI's healthcare, research and secure cloud service portfolio.
Required qualifications to be successful in this role:
- You'll bring a blend of technical depth, commercial awareness and leadership capability, with the confidence to engage equally with engineers, researchers, architects and executive stakeholders.
Essential Skills & Experience:
- Extensive hands-on experience designing and delivering Microsoft Azure solutions in enterprise environments.
- Strong expertise in Terraform and Infrastructure as Code.
- Significant experience building and operating GitHub Actions CI/CD pipelines and DevOps tooling.
- Strong Python and Bash scripting capability.
- Hands-on experience with Docker, Kubernetes and containerised platforms.
- Deep understanding of Microsoft Entra ID, RBAC, Conditional Access and Zero Trust security models.
- Experience designing secure cloud networking architectures and private connectivity patterns.
- Proven ability to engage senior client stakeholders and lead technical discussions at executive level.
- Experience contributing to technical proposals, business development activities or service creation.
- Excellent communication, collaboration and problem-solving skills.
- A curious mindset with a passion for innovation, continuous learning and emerging technologies including AI-assisted engineering.
Desirable Skills & Experience:
- Azure Landing Zones and Cloud Adoption Framework.
- Experience within healthcare, NHS, life sciences or other highly regulated environments.
- Familiarity with SATRE (Standard Architecture for Trusted Research Environments).
- Experience with Azure Databricks, Microsoft Fabric or Microsoft Purview.
- Open-source software development and community engagement experience.
- Exposure to React, Playwright, Porter Bundles or similar modern development frameworks.
- Knowledge of Trusted Research Environments, secure data platforms or research computing environments.
Preferred Certifications:
- AZ-305 Azure Solutions Architect Expert
- AZ-104 Azure Administrator
- AZ-400 Azure DevOps Engineer Expert
- AZ-500 Azure Security Engineer Associate
Why This Role Is Different:
- Unlike traditional platform engineering positions, this role combines open-source product stewardship.
