As a Backend / Platform Software Engineer, you’ll play a key role in designing, building, and deploying cloud-native applications that drive mission success. Due to the secure nature of the programme, you will need to hold UK Security Clearance or be eligible to go through this clearance. This role is based on a Secure Site.

Your future duties and responsibilities: In this role, you will develop and enhance backend services that underpin critical applications used within national security environments. Working within Agile delivery teams, you will collaborate closely with software, platform, and infrastructure specialists to build reliable, scalable, and secure cloud-native solutions. You’ll take ownership of features throughout the development lifecycle, from design and implementation through to deployment and operational support. You will also contribute to modern engineering practices by improving automation, deployment pipelines, testing approaches, and infrastructure capabilities. Your work will directly support the delivery of high-quality software while enabling teams to deploy and operate services efficiently within complex, mission-critical environments.

  • Design & Develop robust backend services and APIs
  • Build & Maintain CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation
  • Develop & Deliver cloud-native software solutions
  • Collaborate & Integrate with platform and infrastructure teams
  • Deploy & Support containerised applications using Kubernetes
  • Improve & Optimise software quality, testing, and release processes

Required qualifications to be successful in this role: To succeed in this role, you should have strong software engineering fundamentals combined with experience developing applications in cloud-native environments. You will be comfortable working across development and deployment activities, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and applying automation and modern engineering practices to improve delivery outcomes.

  • Experience developing software using Java, Go, or Python
  • Strong background in backend application development
  • Experience with Kubernetes and container platforms
  • Knowledge of CI/CD tooling and deployment automation practices
  • Experience working within Linux environments
  • Proficiency with Git and source control workflows
  • Understanding of Infrastructure as Code concepts and associated tooling
  • Knowledge of cloud-native application development principles
  • Experience working within Agile software delivery teams
  • Strong problem-solving and collaboration skills
