Role Summary

  • This role sits at the core of EMEA strategic planning, with primary responsibility for generating insight-driven analysis to support senior management decision-making and sustainable growth across the region.

The individual will focus on delivering robust strategic and competitive intelligence, including holistic peer comparison, grounded in detailed analysis of publicly disclosed information and internal/external data.

  • The role will contribute to EMEA's growth agenda by supporting the development of strategic priorities, including portfolio optimisation and the identification of mid- to long-term growth opportunities.

This will involve evaluating competitive positioning and translating insights into actionable recommendations to inform business and investment/divestment decisions.

  • A key aspect of the role is to ensure consistency, rigour, and clarity in strategic analysis and internal reporting.

The individual will prepare high-quality materials and briefing notes to support discussions at senior management, CEO, CSO, and executive forums.

  • The role requires close collaboration with key stakeholders, including the CEO, the General Managers of the Strategic Planning Department(CSO&CFO), as well as Corporate Research Department and Financial Research Department.

Through these partnerships, the individual will source, validate, and interpret financial and strategic data, ensuring alignment and consistency across analytical outputs.

  • In addition, the role will involve ongoing monitoring of the competitive landscape through systematic analysis of peer disclosures and performance trends.

Given the lack of fully comparable, like-for-like disclosure across EMEA peers, the role requires strong analytical judgement and the ability to apply tailored methodologies to derive meaningful and decision-relevant insights.

  • Competitive & Peer Analysis
  • Conduct in-depth analysis of publicly disclosed materials (annual reports, investor presentations, earnings releases and other data source) across peer institutions such as European banks, US banks and other banks
  • Expand coverage beyond traditional banks to include non-bank financial institutions and relevant ecosystem players (e. g., fintechs, asset managers, payments)
  • Track and analyse AI adoption trends and digital transformation initiatives across peers and adjacent industries
  • Build structured benchmarking frameworks covering financial, strategic, and operational metrics
  • Identify competitive positioning, strategic direction, and capital allocation trends based on disclosed information
  • Strategic Insight & Advisory
  • Translate competitive analysis into clear, actionable insights for senior management and stakeholders
  • Support formulation of strategic positioning, including identification of white spaces and growth opportunities
  • Provide analytical input to inform key strategic initiatives, business investments, and portfolio transformation
  • Executive Reporting & Internal Deliverables
  • Prepare high-quality internal reports and briefing materials on competitive dynamics and strategic implications
  • Develop presentations for management committees or key meetings, ensuring clarity, consistency, and impact
  • Support internal strategy discussions, including regular reporting cycles and ad-hoc deep dives
  • Continuous Competitive Monitoring
  • Track and synthesise key competitor developments, including strategy updates, financial performance, and organisational changes
  • Maintain up-to-date competitive dashboards and analysis packs for ongoing reference
  • Provide timely insights on material changes in the competitive landscape
  • Collaboration & Data Partnership
  • Work closely with internal stakeholders to source, validate, and interpret financial and strategic data
  • Identify necessary external data required for necessary analysis and utilise such data for holistic peer comparison
  • Provide analytical outputs and competitive insights to support broader internal stakeholders
  • Contribute to the development of consistent data frameworks and analytical standards across the organisation
  • Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Experience in competitive intelligence function in large financial institutions.
  • Experience in top-tier financial institutions or leading strategy/management consultancies is highly desirable.
  • Strong numerical, financial, statistics and logical thinking skills
  • Professional qualifications such as ACA/ACCA, CFA, or equivalent are advantageous
  • Strong understanding of financial statements, accounting principles, and financial analysis is essential
  • Effective presentation and writing skills
  • Experience of working in a multi-cultural environment with colleagues preferred
  • Quick learner and ability to interpret SMBC's strategy and position SMBC is in
