Location: Norwich, Great Yarmouth, Dereham & Thetford.

Key Responsibilities of a Small Group Tutor
  • Build secure relationships with young people and their families.
  • To plan and deliver effective teaching and learning for each young person.
  • To manage behaviour positively and consistently.
  • To adhere to CF's policies, procedures and expectations for Education systems and documentation.
  • To develop teaching and learning and support colleagues across the service.
Key Tasks

In support of Key Responsibility 1: Build secure relationships with young people and their families.

  • Establish a secure and positive relationship with pupils, rooted in mutual respect and dignity.
  • Persevere when required, recognising their thoughts and feelings whilst maintaining appropriate and professional boundaries.
  • Set high expectations based upon knowledge of each individual, providing support and guidance so that these are achievable.
  • Lead by example by consistently displaying the positive attitudes, values and behaviour which are expected of the young people.
  • Where appropriate engage with parents at the beginning and end of sessions conveying positive aspects and building self-esteem of each young person.

In support of Key Responsibility 2: To plan and deliver effective teaching and learning for each young person.

  • Be aware of students' capabilities and their prior knowledge, and plan teaching to build on these.
  • Use CF tracking grids to record attainment and identify next objectives to teach in English and Maths.
  • Where appropriate, use pupils' own interests to engage and enthuse.
  • Use AQA Unit awards, and/or refer to additional specifications and/or pupils' interests to plan and teach additional content during sessions, in particular PSHE topics or life skills.
  • Ensure secure knowledge of the subject and curriculum areas before teaching; undertaking own research if required.
  • Use this to support planning process, and to actively address misconceptions during sessions.
  • Understand how a range of factors can inhibit learning and identify ways to best overcome this; adapting session structure and content to support individuals and researching further if required.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and take responsibility for promoting high standards of literacy, articulacy and the correct use of standard English.
  • Use session participation, work produced and assessments to provide positive and constructive feedback and support students to reflect on the progress they have made and identify next steps for learning.
  • Encourage students to develop a responsible and conscientious attitude to their own work.
  • Regularly reflect on the effectiveness of sessions and approaches making adaptations to improve attitude, engagement or attainment.
  • Undertake, mark (where appropriate) and report formative and summative assessments to measure students' progress or identify specific learning needs.
  • Report the progress of young people on a half-termly basis and provide additional information to be shared with the referrer or other professionals as required.

In support of Key Responsibility 3: To manage behaviour positively and consistently.

  • Manage behaviour effectively to ensure a good and safe working relationship.
  • Have clear rules and expectations for behaviour during sessions, if necessary, establishing a framework for supporting behaviour choices with a range of strategies, using praise, sanctions and rewards consistently.

In support of Key Responsibility 4: To adhere to CF's policies, procedures and expectations for Education systems and documentation.

  • Record attendance through CF systems at the start and end of each session.
  • Fulfil all duties of safeguarding towards young people; report concerns immediately through the CF office and MyConcern system.
  • Liaise with CF Education Team staff to best support young people and their families.
  • Attend Professional Development sessions, and proactively seek opportunities to improve their practice.
  • Adhere to the CF Code of Conduct and company policies and procedures.

In support of Key Responsibility 5: To develop teaching and learning and support colleagues across the service.

  • Support the development of teaching and learning pedagogy through own research and trialling new resources and approaches.
  • Support the development of a CF Tutor resource bank.
  • Plan and develop teaching and learning training sessions as required.
  • Offer support and guidance to tutors, including those new to role, through a range of activity.
