We are recruiting three experienced System Safety Engineers to join a major rail engineering and asset strategy programme within a large, safety-critical metro environment. These roles sit within a dedicated System Safety & Technical Assurance function and will play a key role in delivering system safety across complex railway infrastructure projects. This is a high-impact contract opportunity for engineers with a strong rail safety engineering background who can provide technical leadership, risk assessment expertise and safety assurance oversight.

The Role

  • Lead and support system safety assurance activities across railway projects.
  • Conduct simple and complex rail safety risk assessments using recognised analysis techniques.
  • Evaluate both project-specific and cumulative impacts of system changes.
  • Develop and implement effective system safety assurance strategies.
  • Contribute to and review Safety Cases and Safety Assurance documentation.
  • Apply and interpret safety legislation and standards within the metro / rail environment.
  • Work closely with designers, engineers and multidisciplinary stakeholders.
  • Provide authoritative technical recommendations that may impact operational railway performance.
  • Engage with internal stakeholders and regulators on complex safety matters.
  • Provide mentoring and technical oversight to support capability development within the safety team.

This role requires strong stakeholder engagement and the ability to communicate complex safety matters clearly and confidently at all levels.

Essential Experience

  • Candidates must have a strong safety engineering background within rail.
  • Proven experience delivering System Safety Assurance within the rail sector.
  • Strong understanding and application of CENELEC standards (EN50126 / EN50129 / EN50716).
  • Thorough knowledge of ROGS and UK rail safety legislation.
  • Experience developing and delivering Safety Cases on railway projects.
  • Demonstrable experience conducting structured safety risk assessments in complex railway environments.
  • Strong understanding of railway system interfaces and risk topography.
  • Experience engaging with regulators on safety-related matters.
  • Engineering degree or equivalent relevant experience.

Desirable

  • Experience within metro or urban rail environments.
  • Experience supporting safety assurance across large transformation or infrastructure programmes.
  • Ability to mentor or provide oversight to junior safety engineers.

Working Pattern

Hybrid working model (London-based office and home working). Some on-site attendance may be required depending on project needs.
