We’re supporting a major UK rail organisation with the appointment of an experienced Lead Rail Route Planner to lead a strategic rail route study as part of its early‑stage development and long‑term planning activity. This is a senior, strategy‑focused role sitting firmly at route and network level, working across the rail system rather than delivery execution. The role acts as the intelligent client and integrator, bringing together specialist technical inputs to shape future rail strategy.
About the Opportunity
This assignment will suit a rail professional who has operated in strategic rail planning environments, leading or shaping route studies, network planning activity, or long‑term development frameworks. You will not be producing detailed demand or capacity models yourself. Instead, the focus is on interpreting, challenging and assuring technical outputs produced by specialist teams and consultancies, ensuring that recommendations are robust, aligned, and clearly articulated.

You’ll bring strong experience in strategic rail planning, with the ability to operate at system level and engage confidently across multiple technical disciplines. This is likely to suit someone with experience from:
- Rail route or network planning teams

- Leading or contributing to rail route or network‑level studies

- Confidently challenging technical outputs without owning detailed modelling
- Working in early‑stage development or long‑term planning contexts
The Role
You’ll take ownership of a strategic rail route study end‑to‑end, providing direction across early‑stage development activity and ensuring coherence across multiple technical inputs. Responsibilities include:
- Leading a strategic rail route study
