We are seeking a Solar Design Engineer to join our central Energy Products & Solutions (EPS) division, supporting the development of high-quality solar PV solutions from initial concept through to final design for delivery. This role sits within a newly established Applications & Technical Authority function, responsible for producing technically robust, commercially aligned solar designs that form the basis of all proposals and project delivery across the business. The successful candidate will play a key role in standardising design quality, improving proposal accuracy, and enabling scalable growth in solar across the group.

Key Responsibilities

  • Solar Design Development (Core Role)
    • Produce detailed solar PV system designs for commercial and industrial projects
    • Develop:
      • Panel layouts (roof and ground‑mounted systems)
      • String configurations and inverter selection
      • DC/AC ratios and system optimisation
      • Select appropriate equipment based on project requirements and constraints
  • Technical Design Pack Creation
    • Prepare design outputs to support firm proposals and delivery handover, including:
      • Single Line Diagrams (SLDs)
      • Layout drawings and system markups
      • Equipment schedules (modules, inverters, mounting systems)
      • Key design assumptions and constraints
  • Support Budget Proposals (Applications Interface)
    • Work alongside the Applications team to validate preliminary designs, refine system sizing & performance assumptions, and ensure proposals are technically deliverable.
  • Technical Authority & Standards
    • Contribute to the development of internal design standards, including:
      • Preferred equipment and configurations
      • Design rules (e.g. inverter loading, string limits, layout constraints)
    • Support the review and approval of designs prior to issue
  • Delivery Handover & Support
    • Provide clear, structured design packs to delivery teams (internal or external)
    • Support technical queries during project execution
    • Ensure design intent is maintained through to installation

Required Skills & Experience

  • Essential
    • Proven experience in solar PV system design (C&I preferred)
    • Strong understanding of:
      • String design and inverter configuration
      • DC system design principles
      • Panel layout optimisation (roof and/or ground mount)
    • Experience producing:
      • SLDs
      • Technical design documentation
    • Familiarity with relevant UK standards and practices
  • Desirable
    • Experience with design tools such as PV*Sol, Helioscope, or similar
    • Basic understanding of:
      • Electrical infrastructure integration (LV/HV)
      • Structural considerations for mounting systems
    • Experience supporting projects through to delivery

Key Attributes

  • Strong attention to detail and technical accuracy
  • Practical, delivery‑focused mindset (not purely theoretical)
  • Able to work in a fast‑paced, evolving environment
  • Comfortable working across teams (sales, applications, delivery)
  • Proactive and solution‑oriented

Reporting Structure

  • Reports into: Head of Energy Products & Solutions (EPS)
  • Works closely with:
    • Applications Engineers
    • Sales teams
    • Delivery teams (e.g. solar installers, contractors)
