Quantity Surveyor (NEC / Rail & Civils) South Yorkshire or Kent (Hybrid / Flexible) Up to £500 a day (Inside IR35)

Certain Advantage is hiring for a Quantity Surveyor based either in South Yorkshire or Kent, or predominantly remote in the UK. This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing specialist engineering contractor delivering complex geotechnical and structural projects across the UK. This role is a 6-month initial contract (likely to be extended) with a hybrid, flexible working model and requires very minimal travel.

Are you an experienced Quantity Surveyor with strong NEC competency, looking to work on varied projects, from major rail schemes to complex structural and geotechnical assets, where your confidence to manage variations, push back on clients, and protect commercial positions will make a direct impact? This is an excellent opportunity to join a well-established business unit within a major environmental and engineering group.

The Company

We are working with a specialist geotechnical and structural contractor operating on technically complex and interesting projects across the UK. Forming part of one of Europe’s fastest-growing environmental and engineering consultancies, the business manages a pipeline of high-profile schemes and is delivering key solutions across the construction, rail, and civil engineering sectors.

The Role

You will take commercial ownership of key, high-profile projects from procurement through to completion, working closely with delivery teams and clients. This role features heavy focus on direct client interaction and commercial negotiation. Day to day you will:

  • Manage contractual risks, variations, and change management processes across both geo (60%) and structures (40%) projects.
  • Maximise monthly valuations and ensure timely submission, assessment, and approval processes.
  • Lead regular meetings and maintain strong, assertive, and confident relationships with clients and delivery teams.
  • Review, negotiate, and agree contractual terms for upcoming tenders and high-risk projects.
  • Protect the company's contractual positions and robustly manage variations and final accounts.
  • Handle a small amount of subcontract procurement with minimal reporting requirements (CDR reports) compared to Tier 1 contractors.

The Individual

We are looking for people who can show:

  • Strong NEC contract competency and experience, as NEC covers approximately 75% of the workload.
  • Ideally experience within the civil engineering, rail or geotechnical.
  • A strong background in managing variations, applications, and protecting commercial positions.

How to prepare for a job interview at Certain Advantage

Show Off Your Safety Knowledge

In construction, health and safety is non-negotiable. Get comfortable with specific safety regulations like COSHH or Working at Height – you might get asked how you’d handle risk assessments or unsafe conditions. We need to show that we prioritise safety above all else.

Be Ready for Hands-On Scenarios

Expect practical questions or even a mini test where you’ll need to demonstrate basic skills. They might set up a scenario and ask how you would approach a specific task. Let’s prepare by brushing up on our trade skills and thinking through past projects we’ve worked on.

Flexibility is Key

Since this is a temporary role, they’ll want to know if you can adapt quickly to different teams and situations. Let's think about past experiences where we've had to adjust on the fly. This will show we’re ready to hit the ground running!

Highlight Your Previous Experience

Temporary roles often require hitting the ground running, so make sure to have a few stories lined up that showcase your relevant experience in construction. We want to emphasise skills that might not be on our CV—like teamwork and problem-solving when things don't go to plan.
