We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced safety engineer who is ready to redefine excellence in process safety for the industries of the future. As Ceres’ ground-breaking electrolyser technology continues to find new applications at ever-increasing scale, we’re looking for tried and tested professionals who can feel equally at home in the world of big-industry (O&G/ChemEng) and fast-paced cleantech. You will be specialising in the safe handling of steam, hydrogen, and oxygen at an industrial scale.

You will be responsible for advising on the development of safety management best practice in Ceres’ unique context and supporting a technology development and/or deployment programme by managing all aspects of its safety assurance., * Identify and analyse hazards and potential controlling measures for fuel cell / electrolysis stacks, systems, and test stands.

  • Create, maintain, and verify safety cases in compliance with all regional regulatory requirements.

  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to develop and document safety management plans.

  • Manage the delivery and evidencing of all activities required to support the safety case for a product development or technology demonstration programme.

  • Represent Ceres as an expert on safety assurance for electrolyser and fuel cell systems and related chemical process best practice.

  • Advise on compliance with relevant industry standards, codes, and regulations, appropriate for the regions considered.

  • Stay informed about advancements in safety technology and industry standards, incorporating relevant updates into existing safety protocols and providing expertise into the wider business.

  • Develop junior engineers, both within the team and the wider organisation, to be able to contribute confidently to safety related activities.

  • Degree in Engineering, Safety Engineering, or a related field. Advanced degrees or certifications in safety management are a plus

  • Proven industrial experience in safety engineering, with a focus on safety at a whole-plant level at pilot-scale or (ideally) larger is a must have

  • Experience in facilitating process safety studies (e.g. HAZOP) or significant experience in scribing the same

  • Experience of the full project lifecycle from initiation through development and operation to end of life

  • In-depth knowledge of safety standards and regulations related to O2 and H2, including ASTM and ASME, and other relevant guidelines

  • Experience managing regulatory approval or formal safety sign-off of a new plant installation or significantly modified process

  • Working knowledge of functional safety standards (e.g. IEC 61508, ISO 26262, IEC 61511) and their real-world application

  • Experienced in selection and application of structured engineering tools and processes applicable to, for example, risk management, problem resolution or requirements management

  • Understanding of basic principles of a wide range of technical disciplines (e.g. thermodynamics, mechanical design, chemical processes, electrical/electronic systems), and demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally

  • Significant experience in managing safety in relation to hazardous substances, flammable atmospheres, gaseous hydrogen, O2-enriched environments

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams

  • Experience in leading a technical team is desirable, either as a line manager or as a technical leader on a project or work package, ideally throughout the whole project lifecycle

  • Willingness to adapt and tailor working practices to suit the demands of the business

  • Strong logical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to conduct thorough risk assessments

  • Attention to detail and a commitment to delivering quality work at pace
