This vacancy is being advertised on behalf of an individual employer. You will be employed by that individual and not Ceredigion County Council. To apply for this job please complete the application form. This appointment is subject to an enhanced DBS check, which will incur no cost to the applicant. If you have an online update DBS you have a great chance of becoming shortlisted for this position as this can help the employer to recruit much quicker. If you wish to update your current DBS please go to DBS Update Service. If requested by the employer, two satisfactory references must be provided. This post is subject to a trial period of 1 month and a probationary period of up to 6 months. Wages will be paid in arrears on a 4 weekly basis once a valid National Insurance (NI) number has been provided. You must be eligible to work in the UK and your employer will conduct document checks prior to commencement. You will receive the appropriate annual leave entitlement as well as all other statutory entitlements, details of which will be set out in your contract of employment. You will also be issued with a Personal Assistant’s Handbook when your employment commences. You will be expected to undertake any mandatory training identified as relevant to this post. The cost of mandatory training will be met through the direct payment. Failure to attend mandatory training may result in your employment offer being withdrawn.

Responsibilities:

  • To be alert and protect me from potential hazards due to my lack of vision.
  • To pick me up and transport to meet a local friendship and walking group.
  • To accompany me on walks, some of which involve hill-walking.
  • To describe people, locations, scenery etc., read aloud written material and where required, make written notes.
  • To ensure I am maintaining regular fluids; I have an underlying medical condition so keeping my fluid intake up is essential.
  • To recognise if I am having an allergic reaction to the environment and prompt me to take antihistamine tablets.
  • To guide me to public conveniences and guide me in the cubicle if it is one I am unfamiliar with.
  • To carry out any other reasonable requests that I or my family may make from time to time.
  • To wear a face mask when in close proximity to me in enclosed spaces such as the car.

Qualifications:

  • Valid DBS as soon as possible.
  • Positive attitude towards disability.
  • Reliable, punctual, trustworthy and friendly.
  • Aware of and respect the confidential nature of the work.
  • Flexible to suit the employer.
  • Respect the independence of the employer.
  • Develop and maintain a supportive relationship.
  • Instil confidence when engaging in leisure and recreational activities.
  • Use initiative by offering own suggestions and ideas regarding activities, places to visit etc.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Non-smoker.
  • Full driving licence and use of a car is essential; appropriate car insurance for work use required.
  • Comfortable around dogs and willing for the guide dog to accompany us.
  • Willing to undertake training as required.
  • Must be comfortable in enclosed spaces and wear a face mask when required.
