Please note, this role involves working with medical certificated devices. Therefore, candidates will need to have demonstrable experience in working with such devices. This role will lead the safe and effective delivery of the Bugzi powered wheelchair loan service whilst also providing technical oversight across the wider product portfolio. This includes responsibility for product compliance, quality systems, production support, technical problem solving, product improvement, and workshop operations. The role combines technical leadership with practical hands-on engineering and manufacturing responsibilities. Purpose of the Role The Quality Assurance Engineer is responsible for the technical leadership, quality management, and regulatory compliance of all products manufactured, refurbished and supported by the Tadworth operation. This role will lead the safe and effective delivery of the Bugzi powered wheelchair loan service whilst also providing technical oversight across the wider product portfolio. This includes responsibility for product compliance, quality systems, production support, technical problem solving, product improvement, and workshop operations. Working closely with operational and service colleagues, the postholder will ensure products are manufactured, refurbished and maintained to the required standards, whilst identifying opportunities to improve product performance, reliability, sustainability and impact for the families Cerebra supports. The role combines technical leadership with practical hands-on engineering and manufacturing responsibilities. The postholder will be expected to actively participate in the manufacture, refurbishment, modification, testing and validation of products, whilst also leading quality, compliance, and continuous improvement activities. Key Areas of Responsibility 1. Technical Leadership Act as the technical lead and engineering authority for all products manufactured, refurbished and supported by the Tadworth operation. Provide day-to-day technical guidance, problem-solving, and decision-making support to workshop and operational staff. Maintain oversight of technical documentation, specifications, product records, and engineering change activities. Liaise with suppliers, manufacturers, and external technical partners to support service delivery and product development. Contribute technical expertise to strategic planning, service improvement, and the introduction of new products, technologies and manufacturing processes. 2. Quality and Medical Device Compliance Lead the implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the Quality Management System (QMS). Ensure products are manufactured, refurbished, and maintained in accordance with applicable quality procedures, medical device regulations and relevant standards. Maintain technical files, risk assessments, compliance documentation, and product records. Lead investigations into complaints, incidents, non-conformances and corrective actions, ensuring lessons learned are implemented. Act as the lead for audits, regulatory compliance, and quality-related activities across the service. 3. Refurbishment, Production & Workshop Operations Lead and actively participate in the manufacture, refurbishment, servicing, modification, testing and validation of Bugzi wheelchairs and other products supported by the Tadworth operation. Coordinate workshop activities, production planning and resource allocation to ensure products are delivered safely, efficiently and to the required quality standards. Act as the senior technical resource within the workshop, providing practical support, fault diagnosis and technical sign-off where required. Manage workshop equipment, tooling, materials and technical suppliers to support service delivery. Lead, line manage and develop workshop technical staff, ensuring work is delivered safely, efficiently and to the required quality standards. 4. Product Support and Continuous Improvement Lead field issue investigations, monitor product performance, and identify opportunities to improve safety, reliability, usability, and manufacturability. Capture learning from service delivery, refurbishment activities, and family feedback to inform future product development. Work closely with the Cerebra Innovation Centre (CIC) Design Team to identify, evaluate and implement product improvements, ensuring operational experience and technical learning are incorporated into future designs. Evaluate and support the introduction of new products, technologies, materials and manufacturing processes. Contribute to the ongoing development of Bugzi and the wider product portfolio. 5. Team Leadership and Service Development Lead, line manage and develop workshop technical staff, ensuring work is delivered safely, efficiently and to the required quality standards. Provide day-to-day leadership, coaching, performance management and technical support to team members, fostering a positive, collaborative and safety-focused working environment. Support the recruitment, induction, training and ongoing professional development of technical staff, volunteers and students where appropriate. Work collaboratively across Cerebra to support service delivery, continuous improvement activities, service planning, reporting and organisational objectives. Maintain professional knowledge through continuing professional development and undertake additional duties appropriate to the role, acting at all times in accordance with Cerebra's policies, procedures and values. Person Specification Essential Criteria Degree in Product Design Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Product Design or a related engineering/technical discipline, or equivalent relevant industry experience Experience working with Class I Medical Devices, assistive technology, powered mobility products or rehabilitation engineering services Experience working in a technical, engineering, manufacturing or product development role, including responsibility for delivering projects independently Experience of hands-on product manufacture, assembly, refurbishment, testing, fault finding or workshop-based engineering activities Strong understanding of engineering principles, materials, manufacturing processes and technical documentation, including the ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications Experience working within a Quality Management System (QMS), maintaining technical documentation and supporting quality and compliance activities Knowledge and understanding of medical device regulations, standards, risk management and product compliance requirements Experience investigating technical issues, carrying out root cause analysis and implementing corrective actions Experience coordinating production, refurbishment or technical service activities and supporting others through technical leadership or supervision Excellent project management, organisational, communication and IT skills, with the ability to prioritise workload and meet deadlines Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams and communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders Practical, proactive and hands-on approach, with a commitment to continuous improvement, quality and safety Willingness to undertake practical workshop activities as a significant part of the role Experience of line management, supervision or mentoring of technical, manufacturing or workshop-based staff Desirable Criteria Experience of quality auditing, ISO 9001, 13485, or similar, supplier management, line management or regulated manufacturing environments Experience of CAD, rapid prototyping, product development and collaboration with design and innovation teams Personal Attributes Strong problem-solving skills and sound technical judgement.
