We are seeking a motivated and professionally minded Building Control Surveyor to support the delivery of a high-quality, customer-focused Building Control service. This role contributes directly to ensuring the health, safety and welfare of people in and around the built environment. The successful candidate will assist with building regulation compliance, dangerous structures, inspections, enforcement activity, assessments, and the maintenance of accurate records — all in line with service plans, statutory requirements and operational procedures. This position is ideal for a detail-oriented professional with strong technical knowledge, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work independently while contributing to wider service objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Building Control & Compliance Support
- Assist in delivering a responsive Building Control service aligned with statutory requirements, service plans and organisational policies.
- Undertake actions to protect the public from dangerous structures, unauthorised works, demolition risks and highway obstructions.
- Participate in an out-of-hours emergency callout rota, providing rapid 24-hour response to dangerous structures.
- Check applications for compliance with Building Regulations and related legislation within required timescales.
- Conduct statutory and routine site inspections under the Building Act 1984, ensuring materials, methods and construction meet required standards.
- Liaise with builders, owners and agents to advise on compliance, materials and construction practices.
- Initiate enforcement procedures when necessary, preparing reports/statements and attending court as a witness.
- Assess and analyse basic structural calculations submitted with plans and notices.
- Consultation & Communication
- Consult with internal and external stakeholders as required and relay outcomes of technical consultations to applicants or agents.
- Provide clear, professional advice to members, applicants, agents, contractors and other internal services.
- Support the promotion and marketing of Building Control services and assist in identifying service improvement or new business opportunities.
- Administration & Record Management
- Maintain accurate records in line with Quality Management Systems and internal procedures.
- Ensure all data handled outside the office complies with information governance policies.
- Deliver work to agreed quality and performance standards as set out in service plans.
- Work flexibly within the team, supporting colleagues during peak periods.
- Apply tact, diplomacy and sound judgment when dealing with difficult or sensitive situations.
- Uphold all organisational policies including health and safety, conduct, safe working practices and performance standards.

- Provide clear and accessible technical advice on Building Regulations and related legislation.

Requirements
- Meets qualification and progression requirements outlined for the career grade.
- Proficient with IT systems including Microsoft Office and specialist back-office/Building Control software.
- Strong understanding of Building Regulations, Approved Documents, and related technical literature.
- Awareness of health & safety legislation relevant to site safety and supervision.
- Excellent communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to continuous professional development with up-to-date CPD records.
- Physical mobility to undertake site inspections, including working at height or in confined spaces.
- Experience with enforcement activity and legal proceedings.
- Knowledge of industry best practice, technical innovations and emerging trends.

Additional Working Requirements
