About your team

At British Gas, our mission is to sell it and mend it. We’ve powered the UK’s homes and businesses for over 200 years. We’re making the UK greener and more energy efficient, using technologies like thermostats, heat pumps, solar panels and EV chargers to help customers reduce their carbon footprint.

About your role

Your mission is to help us mend it. Smart meters unlock a greener future by sending data in real time, showing customers how much energy they use and how to save. As an apprentice, you’ll learn to install and repair them and ensure customers get the most from their meters.

During the programme you’ll study at our award-winning academies, earn qualifications, and develop under experienced engineers to become a top-tier Smart Metering Engineer. You’ll visit homes in your area, demonstrating energy-saving practices to customers.

Responsibilities

  • Learn to install and repair smart meters and ensure customers get the best out of them.
  • Work under the guidance of experienced engineers and visit customers in their homes.
  • Demonstrate energy efficiency practices and help customers understand their usage and savings.

Skills you need to succeed

  • 4 GCSEs, ideally including Maths & English, at grade C/4 or above or a recognised equivalent
  • A CV showing genuine passion for learning a trade, mechanically or technically minded, and strong customer service
  • A full UK driving licence with no more than 6 points
  • Availability to attend training at one of our four UK academies, with accommodation and travel provided if needed

What’s in it for you

  • Starting salary of £16,053 rising through progression milestones
  • Salary increases to £19,493 at week 28, £22,932 at week 35, £25,485 at week 52, and £32,861 at week 60
  • After completing the programme and aftercare, salary increases to £38,589 with bonus and add-ons
  • London Weighting Allowance (£4,160–£6,240, location dependent)
  • Expensed electric van for work use, with an EV charge point and charge card
