The Team: Centrica Business Solutions (CBS) designs, builds, operates, and maintains clean energy assets that enable customers to decarbonise their operations. Our end-to-end offering includes the supply of green energy, project delivery expertise, financing solutions, and industry-leading operational capabilities. Together, we help customers improve energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and balance commercial performance with sustainability goals.
The Job: This is an exciting opportunity to play a leading role in the delivery of low‑carbon mechanical building services solutions. You will contribute to the development of sustainable, zero‑carbon, innovative, and high-quality mechanical designs, supporting our customers’ transition to cleaner energy systems. The successful candidate will be confident working directly with clients and possess a strong track record in the design and delivery of mechanical building services installations. You will be responsible for both the detailed design and the successful integration of low‑carbon technologies, as well as providing technical oversight during installation.
- Produce high-quality mechanical engineering documentation, including specifications, schedules, and technical reports
- Carry out pipework sizing calculations for systems including LTHW, CHW, HWS, CWS, steam, gas, flues, compressed air, and specialist systems
- Perform ductwork sizing calculations
- Size mechanical plant and equipment, including pumps, plate heat exchangers, boilers, CHP units, heat pumps, thermal stores, buffer vessels, calorifiers, fans, AHUs, and chillers
- Undertake heat gain and heat loss calculations
- Develop heating and cooling load profiles
- Carry out thermal modelling and system performance analysis
- Produce BMS system descriptions and control strategies
- Participate in HAZOP and LOPA studies
- Conduct DSEAR assessments
- Complete PED calculations and prepare associated compliance documentation
The Person: You will be an experienced mechanical designer, currently working within building services design or a closely related discipline. You will hold a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a relevant equivalent qualification. You will be a confident and effective communicator, capable of working both independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams. You will demonstrate a proactive and innovative mindset, with a continuous focus on improving design quality, safety, and delivery outcomes. A professional, safety-first approach is essential, along with pride in delivering work to a high standard through to completion.
Qualifications & Experience: An Engineering Council – accredited honours degree (CIBSE, IET, or IMechE), or an HNC in a relevant discipline with a commitment to further professional development. Working towards, or already achieved, IEng or CEng professional registration. A forward-thinking approach with a passion for design innovation. Experience across a range of engineering activities, ideally including:
- Site surveys and inspections
- Solution development
- Building services design
- Client and design team meetings
- Snagging and commissioning of systems
- Problem diagnosis and solutioning
Personal Qualities: Confident and professional when representing Centrica in client-facing environments. Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain complex engineering solutions. High attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality work. Able to inspire confidence and build effective working relationships with colleagues and clients. Comfortable working autonomously, using initiative to manage technical responsibilities with minimal supervision.
