We have a brilliant new opportunity for an HSE Director to join our team. Acting as a partner to senior Business Unit leadership in the management of operational and strategic HSE risks, you will provide support and oversight to our British Gas Energy, Bord Gais Energy, Centrica Energy and New Business & Net Zero Management (Hive) Business Units.

Location: This is a UK based role with regular travel required to attend site meetings as needed (travel c40 - 50%). Additionally, there will be a requirement for some international travel.

What will you do?

  • Provide direct leadership to a team of HSE Professionals dispersed internationally, and act as a member of the HSE Leadership Committee across Centrica in the pursuit of strategic and lasting improvements.
  • Work with Business Unit colleagues to proactively identify and control HSE risks. These shall be documented in appropriate risk registers, monitored and controls implemented to ensure risk is reduced in line with business appetite / target levels.
  • Develop and implement an effective first line of defence (LOD1) assurance program to monitor and control HSE risks, ensure adherence to internal standards & procedures and compliance with all applicable external laws & regulations.
  • Work collaboratively with Group HSE and Internal Audit in the preparation and execution of second line (LOD2) and third line (LOD3) assurance arrangements.
  • Implement all Group Strategies, Policies and Standards in respect of HSE for Business Unit(s) which you support, and develop aligned Business Unit specific procedures where required.
  • Develop and execute, in collaboration with operational colleagues, the annual HSE improvement plan for the Business Unit(s). This shall be aligned (as a minimum) to the Centrica HSE Strategy and delivery of the Centrica HSE Improvement Plan.
  • Ensure all incidents, events and near misses etc. are appropriately investigated to determine root causes and accurately recorded in the Group HSE reporting tool.
  • Work with Business Unit leadership and the Group HSE Director to agree budgets and resource levels.

Here's who we are looking for:

  • Significant demonstrable experience in HSE roles and / or operational roles with a high degree of HSE responsibility and accountability, alongside extensive leadership experience.
  • Demonstrable experience of managing Health, Safety and Environmental risks.
  • Demonstrable experience of leading and managing teams.
  • Strong interpersonal, influencing and relationship management skills. Able to inspire and lead others without line management authority.
  • As a minimum, NEBOSH Diploma in Health & Safety, or similar and equivalent level qualification such as NVQ or NCRQ.
  • Preference given to candidates with chartered IOSH status or full membership of IIRSM or IEMA (or above), or similar chartered status from a science / engineering related professional body.
