About your team: At British Gas, our mission is to sell it and mend it. We’ve been powering the UK’s homes and businesses for over 200 years – but supplying energy is just part of what we do. We’re making the UK greener and more energy efficient, getting closer to Net Zero. By using clever tech like thermostats, heat pumps, solar panels and EV chargers, we’re making it cheaper and easier for our customers to reduce their carbon footprint. Join our Metering Infrastructure team to ensure every customer has a working smart meter. You’ll manage metering technology, support new device projects, and maintain compliance with standards and licence conditions.
Location - Flexible but role requires regular travel to company offices and external stakeholders (e.g. Flex-Warrington, Magna Park).
Responsibilities:
- Ensure technical compliance of the metering estate
- Maintain safety and certification standards
- Support the business on technical issues
- Engage with industry forums and contribute to safety standards
- Collaborate with industry partners, manufacturers, and MAPs
- Guide hardware decisions and assess risks
- Manage internal and external teams for metering triage and certification testing
Key Accountabilities:
- In Service Testing: Manage certification and recovery processes; Oversee 3rd party testing activities; Engage with industry and suppliers for testing arrangements
- Manufacturer Hardware Engagement: Maintain technical relationships with manufacturers; Develop work instructions and sign off component changes; Conduct forensic analysis with manufacturers and MAPs
- Triage Facility Management: Work with triage partner Flex for device refurbishment; Audit Flex processes and document work instructions
- Metering Technical Support: Provide technical support for compliance audits; Review faulty asset reports to identify trends
- Industry Engagement: Represent BG at technical industry bodies; Lobby for business interests and achieve necessary certifications and memberships
- Team Leadership and Culture: Foster a positive, collaborative, and high-performance culture; Encourage open communication, continuous learning, and professional development; Maintain a supportive and inclusive environment
Requirements:
- Experience in performance management, service level management, or similar roles in energy, utilities, or telecommunications
- Understanding of smart metering technologies and regulatory requirements
- Technical knowledge of electrical engineering, UK metering systems, and British Gas Installation processes
- Knowledge of electricity and gas metering standards and regulations
- Ability to lead continuous improvement initiatives
- Analytical skills to interpret data and drive decision-making
- Project management skills to oversee multiple initiatives
- Effective communication and stakeholder engagement
- Detail-oriented with a focus on compliance and risk management
- Degree in engineering (electrical, electronic, mechanical) desirable
