As a Data Engineer within British Gas Energy, youâll design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines and data models that power insights, analytics, and decisionâmaking across the business. You will work closely with Data Analysts, MI teams, and Data Scientists to ensure our data is accurate, accessible, and engineered for performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and build robust ETL pipelines to integrate large datasets into the BGB Data Estate.
- Develop scalable data products to support analytics, reporting, and machine learning initiatives.
- Implement data quality checks, audits, and validation to ensure accuracy and reliability.
- Maintain and evolve our data architecture and cloudâbased infrastructure.
- Optimise data extraction, processing, and storage for performance and cost efficiency.
- Provide technical support, troubleshooting, and guidance to data users across the business.
- Document data engineering processes, best practices, and data lineage.
The Person
Youâre a technically strong Data Engineer who enjoys solving complex data problems and delivering highâquality solutions. Youâre comfortable working with ambiguity, curious about new technologies, and motivated to work collaboratively with a broad range of stakeholders. You take pride in delivering reliable, wellâdesigned data pipelines and models that support operational and strategic decisionâmaking. Youâll be analytical and detailâoriented, with strong problemâsolving skills and the ability to work through moderately complex data engineering tasks even when things are ambiguous. Youâll communicate clearly, collaborate well with crossâfunctional teams, and bring a positive, solutionsâfocused approach to your work. With a growth mindset and a natural curiosity, youâll always be looking for ways to learn, improve, and develop your skills.
Qualifications & Experience
- Significant experience in Data Engineering with proven experience building scalable pipelines and data models.
- Strong proficiency in SQL.
- Good working knowledge of cloud-based tools such as Microsoft Fabric and Databricks.
- Experience programming in Python, PySpark, or Scala.
- Familiarity with big data technologies such as Hadoop and Spark (advantageous).
- Degree in IT/Computer Science/Engineering or relevant professional qualification/certification.
