Location

This role will be based out of our London office. The successful candidate must be comfortable with international travel (circa 15%), especially visiting our Aalborg and Copenhagen offices.

About the Role

You will be responsible for leading and developing the trade and communications surveillance framework as well as managing and mentoring the team of surveillance analysts. Your key areas of responsibility will be to:

  • Lead the design and delivery of a multi‑jurisdictional surveillance framework aligned to MAR, REMIT, EMIR and applicable exchange rules.
  • Oversee trade, transaction and communications surveillance, ensuring effective detection and escalation of market abuse risks.
  • Maintain and enhance risk‑based, proportionate surveillance systems aligned with business growth.
  • Build and lead a high‑performing team, driving quality, consistency and strong regulatory judgment.
  • Drive strategic transformation initiatives, including system upgrades, new products and regulatory remediation.
  • Lead daily surveillance operations, investigations and risk assessments.
  • Collaborate with IT, commercial, legal and senior stakeholders, and engage with regulators and exchanges.
  • Support regulatory enquiries, deliver training, and manage external reporting obligations (e.g. STORs / REMIT notifications).
  • Deliver insightful MI and board‑level reporting on surveillance risks and effectiveness.
  • Track regulatory developments and assess their impact on the surveillance framework.

Here’s who we’re looking for

You will be an experienced senior leader with extensive experience in leading and managing a surveillance function, ideally within the commodities industry and with a strong technical knowledge of key regulations, including MAR, REMIT, EMIR, MIFID and how they apply to physical and financial products.

Proven experience designing and running surveillance frameworks covering both on‑venue and OTC activity in the power, gas, LNG and commodities trading environment which are scalable, adaptable and fit for purpose. Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage, mentor, motivate and build successful surveillance teams in multiple locations. Deep understanding of physical and financial energy markets products and systems including algorithmic or automated trading strategies as well as deep familiarity with exchange surveillance expectations and energy market design. Experience in presenting surveillance outcomes and risk assessments to executive level stakeholders including board level reporting. Ability to produce insightful management information on surveillance effectiveness, emerging risks, thematic findings and regulatory exposure. Conducting and overseeing investigations into trading conduct using strong regulatory judgment. Proven ability to build strong relationships across commercial teams. Data‑literate and highly analytical, with the ability to translate market behaviour into regulatory risk. Excellent stakeholder management skills, including engagement with regulators and senior commercial leadership.
