The Domain Architect SMART defines and maintains the target architecture across metering services, financial metering, and meter asset management, aligning to enterprise guardrails and strategic metering platforms while balancing where the domain should differentiate for regulatory and operational needs. The role shapes decisions around customer, regulatory, commercial, and operational outcomes such as settlement accuracy, installation efficiency, asset reliability, and cost to serve, ensuring proportionate and value-led design.
Act as the steward of shared metering platforms, driving reuse, reduce duplication, and evolve reference architectures for the end-to-end metering lifecycle.
Location: UK-based hybrid role, Occasional travel to site.
The Day to Day:
- Define and maintain the target architecture for the Smart Metering domain, spanning metering services, financial metering, and meter asset management.
- Ensure alignment with enterprise architecture guardrails and strategic platform roadmaps (e.g., AMT MeterFlow/MarketFlow, Callisto, Amethyst, SAP Microgen).
- Promote adoption of shared metering platforms and services, and clearly distinguish where Smart Metering should differentiate (e.g., regulatory obligations, settlement accuracy) versus standardise.
- Shape decisions around metering-specific customer, regulatory, operational, and financial outcomes-not individual systems.
- Align architecture to product OKRs and value levers such as settlement accuracy, installation efficiency, field force effectiveness, cost to serve, and reliability of meter-to-cash flows.
- Challenge unnecessary complexity and ensure designs are proportionate to the value delivered.
- Champion platform reuse across the metering ecosystem.
- Guide teams on when to use existing metering services, extend shared components, or build new.
- Identify duplication across field ops tooling, asset repositories, and data flows early, and drive convergence onto strategic platforms.
- Contribute to reference architectures for end-to-end metering (install ? commission ? operate ? maintain ? settle).
- Ensure solutions comply with enterprise guardrails as well as industry and regulatory requirements (e.g., GSOP, MHHS, SMETS standards).
- Operate within agreed decision rights and escalate only when choices impact cross-domain flows such as billing, customer operations, or regulatory reporting.
- Design with a whole-system view across the full smart metering lifecycle.
- Consider integration, data quality, security, resilience, settlement impacts, commissioning flows, asset events, and downstream consumption by Billing, Market Operations, and Customer Service.
- Ensure architectures are buildable, supportable, and scalable under real-world field operations conditions.
- Work closely with delivery squads, field ops technology teams, and industry programme teams.
- Validate designs against operational realities such as engineer processes, asset data capture, network variability, and industry timings.
- Adapt architecture based on delivery feedback and evolving regulatory constraints.
- Incorporate lifetime cost of metering assets, vendor economics, cloud utilisation, licensing, data retrieval costs, and operational efficiencies into design decisions.
- Provide clear, balanced analysis for build vs buy decisions in areas such as commissioning, testing, remote operations, or financial metering reconciliation.
- Help product teams understand the cost impacts of architectural choices on meter operations and settlement accuracy.
- Act as a trusted advisor across Smart Metering Operations, Billing, Market Operations, Engineering Leads, and Technology Leaders.
- Influence without authority, bringing clarity to complex metering and industry topics.
- Constructively challenge where needed to ensure robust, value-driven architecture.
- Coach Solution Architects and engineers working in Smart Metering, raising the maturity of architecture across metering services, asset management, and market interaction.
- Promote standards, platform reuse, quality, and continuous improvement.
- Embed architectural clarity and consistency across delivery teams.
- Provide ongoing mentoring and guidance to architects and engineers in the metering domain.
- Support capability uplift through design reviews, knowledge sharing, and continuous refinement of metering patterns, principles, and architectural guardrails.
What we need from you:
- Experience delivering solution and domain architectures across multiple projects or platforms.
- Strong understanding of business processes and their alignment with technology solutions.
- Excellent communication skills, able to engage technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strategic thinking with the ability to plan and implement mid to long-term technology roadmaps.
- Experience with architectural governance and compliance in a large organisation.
- Demonstrates the safe and responsible use of AI tools, with clear knowledge of when AI use is appropriate and strong awareness of accuracy, bias and compliance.
- Strong ability to recognise higher risk scenarios and escalate to governance or security as needed.
