Centrica Energy has an exciting new opportunity for a skilled Legal Counsel to join our dedicated team on our journey towards energising a greener, fairer future. If you have a law degree and would like to make your contribution to the future in energy, now is your chance.
Location: The role can be based out of any of our offices in either London, Aalborg or Copenhagen on a hybrid basis.
The purpose of the role is to provide legal support primarily for the gas and power trading activities of Centrica Energy. You will have a variety of responsibilities including:
- Providing strategic legal advice to the business to assist with the negotiation of agreements with a focus on gas and power trading.
- Negotiating and drafting of standard master agreements with external counterparties for physically and financially settled energy commodity trading (UK and Europe gas and power, emissions allowances, renewable certificates).
- Participating in project groups / work groups giving legal advice and assessments.
- Working as part of project teams either for transactional work or to help implement new processes, products and systems such as approving new strategic business initiatives, new products and entry into new geographical jurisdictions.
- Drafting and negotiating contracts in co-operation with the business.
- Developing and maintaining templates for the standard master agreements (ISDA, EFETs, MNA, GTMA, etc), proactively keeping up to date with legal developments of the agreements.
- Assessing applicable forthcoming legislation changes (in conjunction with Regulatory Affairs and Compliance as appropriate) and advising Centrica Energy on potential impact.
- Contributing to various initiatives within Centrica Energy and Centrica Group legal teams.
- Instructing and working with external counsel.
- Managing Centrica's overall legal risk position by ensuring that contracts reflect best practice.
Who are we looking for?
- A law degree from the UK or a European country.
- Experience in drafting agreements and negotiating standard master agreements for physical and financial trading of power and gas like EFET, ISDA etc.
- Commodities experience.
- Ability to speak and write in English fluently.
- Experience working as a legal counsel/attorney or similar.
- Ideally you will be a self-starter who can keep calm in a fast-moving environment whilst prioritising different tasks appropriately in co-operation with other legal counsels.
- The role also requires that you can manage a varied workload to a high level of detail and be able to break down complex legal matters effectively to allow for clear understanding and decision making.
- Depending on your specialties and interests this role could include working across European markets and on other international markets in the future.
