The Faculty of Arts, Business and Social Sciences is seeking to appoint a Senior Lecturer (Scholarship and Professional Practice) in Deaf Studies who can make a substantial contribution in course leadership and teaching to our BA (Hons) British Sign Language in both pathways principally (Deaf Studies) but including (Interpreting) and the MA Interpreting programme. The BSL programmes are located within the School of Social Science, Humanities and Creative Industries, which constitutes a rich and diverse range of academic disciplines including BSL, Deaf Studies, Interpreting, Sociology, Criminology, English, History, Film production and journalism etc.
We are looking to appoint a committed and enthusiastic individual to lead our MA interpreting course and contribute to the provision of high-quality teaching, primarily on theory-based modules (including but not restricted to linguistics for BSL learners, translanguaging, contemporary Deaf Studies, Deaf education policy and practice). Experience or expertise in the areas of Deaf Studies, Deaf Education, and Sign Language and Deaf community related Policy issues are welcomed, as is the ability to bring new areas of expertise based on the Deaf lived experience. The ability to teach on language and / or linguistics courses would be an advantage.
Responsibilities
- Course leadership and teaching for BA (Hons) British Sign Language pathways (Deaf Studies and Interpreting) and MA Interpreting programme.
- Lead MA interpreting course and contribute to high-quality teaching of theory-based modules such as linguistics for BSL learners, translanguaging, contemporary Deaf Studies, Deaf education policy and practice.
- Develop and deliver modules on Deaf Studies, Deaf Education, Sign Language, and related policy issues.
- Contribute to the academic community through scholarship and professional practice activities.
Qualifications
- At least a Masters’ degree (ideally a PhD) in a relevant subject and experience of teaching, preferably in the higher education sector.
- Fluency in BSL, ideally native speaker, and a strong background in Deaf Studies and Deaf Education.
- Experience or expertise in Deaf community related policy issues, and the ability to bring new areas of expertise based on Deaf lived experience.
- Ability to teach on language and/or linguistics courses would be an advantage.
