Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist in Adolescent Community Treatment Service (ACTS)

We have a vacancy for a Full-time (10 PAs) Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist to work within the nationally-recognised and award-winning CAMHS Adolescent Community Treatment Team within CNWL.

We are looking for an energetic, innovative and dedicated child and adolescent psychiatrist with a special interest in home treatment, keen to work with a dynamic and passionate consultant colleague and MDT clinicians.

This post offers a great opportunity to realise your creative ideas for service development and opportunities for teaching and training as part of the higher training scheme and strong links with Imperial College London to develop research interests.

This post attracts a Golden Hello of 20K payable in two instalments (subject to eligibility, taxable and non pensionable), Relocation package for up to 8K (subject to eligibility), a generous annual leave entitlement, study leave, the NHS pension scheme and other financial benefits such as a range of staff discounts including discounts on the purchase and lease of new cars.

Main Duties of the Job

ACTS provides high-intensity support to young people in the community, as an alternative to a Tier 4 inpatient admission, and supports young people in hospital to facilitate discharge back to the community and reduce the length of hospital stay.

The multidisciplinary team provides tailored individualised interventions, including pharmacological, family and individual psychological interventions, informed by evidence-based practice, for young people with acute mental health conditions, in the least restrictive manner, as close to home as possible.

We work in a collaborative way with young people and their families to support them on the path to recovery. We provide a multidisciplinary approach to assessment and treatment and will work closely with the referral network to ensure continuity of care.

Job Responsibilities

Clinical Duties Include:

  1. Assuming Consultant responsibility for young people under the care of ACTS.
  2. Providing psychiatric assessment, including risk assessment for young people referred to, and under the care of, the service. This includes undertaking urgent gate keeping assessments.
  3. Providing treatment for young people under the care of ACTS, including providing medication management.
  4. Working in close collaboration with the inpatient and bed management teams.
  5. Working in partnership with young people, parents and carers to develop evidence-based, effective and agreed care plans.
  6. Ensuring effective communication with referring and receiving teams throughout the Trust.
  7. Providing consultation, advice and appropriate support to professionals in the wider network of the young person and/or family.
  8. Coordinating multiagency packages of care, treatment and support for young people and their families with complex mental health problems.
  9. Initiating and participating in care plan review meetings, CPAs and other multiagency meetings.
  10. Coordinating clinical liaison with clinicians in other community CAMHS services and other agencies.
  11. Contributing to the CNWL Out of Hours consultant psychiatric on-call rota.
  12. Providing cross-cover for the other consultant in the team for annual and study leave as part of planned reciprocal cover arrangements.
  13. Auditing of psychiatric practice and multidisciplinary work.
  14. Recording of clinical activity and prompt submission of returns in line with service requirements.
  15. Maintaining accurate, contemporaneous medical notes in line with the Trust’s record keeping policy.

Management Duties Include:

  1. Taking a leadership role within the team and providing appropriate support, supervision and psychiatric advice to other team members.
  2. Sharing with colleagues responsibility for the day to day management of the team.
  3. Attending and chairing regular meetings as described in the job plan.
  4. Active involvement in local Care Quality and Performance group.
  5. Active involvement in the Quality Improvement programme for Tier 4 within the organisation.
  6. Participating in the planning, distribution and allocation of clinical, administrative, professional and managerial tasks.
  7. In partnership with colleagues, developing common clinical policies and guidelines for the teams.
  8. Collaborating with the Service Manager in the development of the service in line with commissioning requirements and service development plans.
  9. Identifying areas of unmet needs and alerting the Service Manager and line manager/clinical director if appropriate.

Clinical Supervision Duties Include:

  1. Providing clinical supervision to junior doctors based in the team.

Liaison Duties Include:

  1. Liaison with the inpatient teams, Urgent Care and Out of Hours teams, CAMHS community teams, learning disability services, adult services etc. regarding the transfer of care of young people in accordance with the Trust Protocols.
  2. Liaising with other services, agencies and professionals as appropriate to clinical work, management tasks or service development.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  1. Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
  2. Listed on the Specialist Register of the GMC Medical Register or eligible to register within six months
  3. Section 12 (2) and Approved Clinician status (or undertaking to obtain this on taking up the post)

Desirable

  1. Higher degree or additional qualifications
  2. Membership of Royal College of Psychiatrist or equivalent qualifications/ certification

Experience & Training

Essential

  1. Membership of a professional indemnity organization
  2. Training will have included psychiatric inpatient management of children of adolescents
  3. Experience of assessing and managing risk in complex patients in acute and community psychiatric settings
  4. Competence in child and adolescent psychopharmacology
  5. Competence in non-medication therapeutic approaches
  6. Experience of Safeguarding Children Framework
  7. Engagement with annual appraisal
  8. Experience in multi-disciplinary teaching
  9. Ability to take a leadership role in a multi-disciplinary team, ensuring high quality care and staff morale
  10. Excellent communication skills in verbal and written media

Desirable

  1. Approved training in relevant therapeutic practice (e.g. CBT, DBT or Family therapy)
  2. Experience of working within a child or adolescent Tier 4 service / intensive community treatment team at a senior level
  3. Management Skills and training
  4. Publications in the field of Psychiatry
  5. Experience working with different cultural backgrounds
  6. Experience in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  7. Completion of Higher Psychiatric Training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry or being within 6 months of achieving CCT accreditation OR Equivalent training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (CESR issued by PMETB)
